SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,439, dated July 4, 1899.

Be it known tlat LWILFRED B. CARTLEDGE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleborough, in the State of lvlassachusetts,`
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Makin g CurbChainsf which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to-provide a machine of simple and compact structure adapted for the manufacture of curb-chain;
and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth.

Fig. 7 represents a side view of the cam for clamping the feed-wire. Fig. 8 represents a side View of the cam for feeding the wire forward to the machine. Fig. 9 represents a View of that portion of the cam, shown in Fig. 8 which causes the forward movement of the wire. Fig. 10 represents a side view of the cam which actuates the cut` ter for severing the Wire to form the blank. Figs. 1l, 12, and 13 represent different views of the tool for closing the end of the link and for twisting -the link. Figs. 14, 15, and 16 represent different views of the vertically-re ciprocated mandrel upon which the link is shaped. Figs. 17, 1S, and 19 represent different views of the tool for bending the wire of the link around the mandrel.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bed of the machine, B the drivingshaft, which is connected with the oppositelylocated parallel shaft B by means of the intermediate shaft C and the miter-gears a c the action of the cutter H, whichis actuated by the cam I, secured to the shaft B'. The bending-tool J, by means of which the severed piece of wire is bent aroundthe mandrel K, is caused to reciprocate by means of the cam L, secu red to the shaft B, and the reacting spring d, the wire in its initial bending being guided by the notches e e, made in the projecting horns e' e of the tool J. The mandrel K, upo'n which the link is bent and closed, is provided with the vertical groove f, as usual in 'chain-machines, but having an oblique notch f formed at one side of the said groove, as shown in Figs. 14 and 15, thesaid notch being adapted to receive the edge of the twisted link g, as shown by the link in Fig.. 15, the said link being supported in this position by means of the wire c, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The mandrel K is operated for upand-down movement by means 0f the cam N Vclosed around the mandrel and subsequently twisted to form a curb-link, is reciprocated by means of the cam S upon the shaft B and the spiral spring T, and the required partial rotation of the tool R is effected by means of the gear-pinion U, the slidingrack U', the cam V upon the shaft C, and the spiral spring V.
The bending-tool J is provided with a recess z', adapted to receive a portion of the previously-formed link g of the chain, and with the inwardly-projecting ledgesg` and j', which are adapted to hold one end of the link at opposite sides while the opposite-end is being turned 4by the partial rotation of the tool R to twist the link, the said tool R being provided with the curved groove k, adapted to firmly hold the closed end of the link while the link is being twisted, and with the outwardly-flaring grooved surfaces m m, which serve to incline the spread ends of the initially-bent link inwardlyto the curved central portion 7s, the said grooved construction dotted line in the side view, Fig. 12.V

The operation of the machine will be as follows: The wirec is vfed forward by means of the action of the cam D upon the lever E and is clamped in its forward position by the action of the cam F upon the level` G, while the cutter H, which serves to sever-the initial .l
blank from the clamped wire c,lis actuated J is brought forward by theaction of the @am L, the wire blank in its initial bending being 15 held in the supporting-notches@ e, made in the projecting horns e e of the tool J, the*` previously-formed link g of the chain beingV yat the s ame time supported by the wire lc or bythe severed wire blank and held in the groovef and notch f of the mandrel K, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When the wire blank c has been bent,around the mandrel lK, as shown in Fig. 4, the link-closing tool lR is brought Yforward by the action of the cam VS to close -theends of -the blank c upon the mandrel K, as shown in Fig. 5, and upon g -the closure ofthe said ends the mandrel is? carried downward from the link by means of the action of the cam N upon the lever 0, to which the mandrel 4is connected by means of the sliding spindle P. The closed end of the link being now held firmly in the closely- -tting .curved groove lc and the opposite i bent end of the link being prevented from?y Yturning in the bending-tool J by means of the ledges j and j', a partial rotation is im parted to the closing and rotative tool R by j thea'ction of the cam V upon the sliding rack U', `and -upon the twisting of the link the ltools J and R, with the'twisted link between them, are actuated by theirrespective cams] to vcarry-the link to a backward position, in which the wire c may be fed through the.
opening of said link, as shown in Fig. y6. The

releasing the completed link gupon Ythe forwardly-fed wire c, as show-n in Fig'. l, and
then the mandrel K is brought vup by the ac-` `tion of thel spring Q at the back of the previously-formed link g-and the wire c, as shown in Figs. l and 2,and the continuous operation of the machine will add successive `twisted links to the chain W.
I claim as my inventionl. In a chain-machine, the combination of to prevent-the rotation of the same in one direction, and the rotative tool provided with the Haring grooved surfaces and the intermediate curved groove, Vwhereby the open end of the link will be closed and then properly held in a tting-groove while the link is being twisted by the said rotative tool, and means for causing the partial rotation of the said tool to twist the link, substantially as described. i
2. In achain-machine, the combination of the mandrel, and means for imparting an upanddown movement thereto, with the bending-tool adapted to bend the wire blank around the mandrel, and provided with the ledges projecting inwardly at opposite sides and adapted to hold the bent link while it is being twisted in one direction, means for actuating the bending-tool, the rotative tool provided `withthe curved groove at its face, and the VHari-ng vgrooved surfaces, means for causing the rotative tool to close the ends of the link around lthe mandrel, and means for impar-ting partial rotation to the rotative tool upon the withdrawal of the mandrel from the link, substantially as described.

In a chain-machine,th`e bending-tool provided with the notched vhorns for holding the wire blau-k after it has been cut off and while it is being bent around the mandrel, and the inwardly-projecting ledges adapted `to prevent the rotation of the bent end of the link while the link is being twisted, and the'recess for receiving a portion of the previouslyformed link,.substantially as described.
4. In a chain-machine, the combination of Athe mandrel, with the bending-tool adapted Ato bend the blank around the mandrel and hold the bent link while it is being'twisted, the rotative tool provided with a curved lgroove on its face, means for rcausing the forward movement of the bending-tool and the rotative tool,- to bend and close the link around the mandrel, means for removing the mandrel from the bent and closed link, means for causing the partial rotation of the rotative tool t0 twist the lin-k, means for causing the backward movement of the bending-tool andthe corresponding forward movement of the rotative tool with the inclosed link to a rearward position for receiving the wire for the Vformation of another link, and means for raising the mandrel in front of'the wire, upon the withdrawal'oi the bending and rotative tools'from the linlgsiibstantiallyas described.
5. In a chain-machine, the rotative tool provided with the vflaring grooved surfaces, and
