Description

N0. 628,267. Patented luly 4, |899. W. A. HAWTHORNE.
WINDOW SASH LOCK. (Application filed July 14, 1598.)`
(No Model.)
l Il 1 A TTRNEV.
ca. noTaLlruo.. WASHING-ron u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM A. HAWTHORNE, OF CARSON, NEVADA.
wlNDoW-sAsH LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,267, dated July 4, 1899.
' Application tied Iuiy 14,1898. serial No. 685,946. ou man.)
nation and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l1 is a perspective View showing the elongated piece of spring metal in position. Fig. 2 is across-sectional view thereof, showing the locking means.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the elongated` piece of spring metal. Fig. 4 is a disassembled view of the locking means.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the window-,frame of the ordinary construction, having the usual vertical extensions 2, 3, and 4 suitably secured thereto, forming between them the inclosing or sliding spaces 5 and 6 for the window-sash.
Secured in the spaces 5 ando, at one side,
as at 8, is an elongated piece of spring metal 9. This piece of metal is curved, as shown, and is adapted to operate against the inner edge of the sash. The inner edge of the sash is rabbeted, forming the space 10 and the rib or flange 11. The rabbeted portion of th sash is inclined, as shown at 12.
The sash 7 has a slot formed therein, this slot being of greater diameter at its inner l edge, as at 13, than at its outer end, as at 14..
Operating in the said slot is a locking-pin 15, having a suitablehead 16. This locking-pin is actuated by the coil-spring 17, which surrounds the same and is arranged Within the enlarged portion of the slot between the pin 18, extending transversely through the pin 15, and the inner end of said enlarged portion of the slot.
The metal strip has apertures 19 formed therein a suitable distance apart for the operation therein of the end of the locking-pin.
2O are apertures formed in the metal strip for the purpose of securing the same to the sash by means of the screws 21.
The spring-metal strip while serving to form a part of the lock also incidentally acts as aweather-strip and permits the dispensing with of the ordinary weather-strip 0r partingbead.
It is thought that no further explanation is necessary, owing to the simplicity of my device.-
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A window-sash lock consisting of a springmetal strip having its one edge curved outwardly and its other edge secured within thel recess of thewindow-frame, said strip being provided'throughout its secured edge with a `series of apertures, combined with a windowsash rail having a rabbet to receive the projecting edgeof said spring-strip, said sashrail being further provided with a recess andV an opening registering therewith, a lockingpin arranged in saidy recess and operating through said opening and adapted to engage in the apertures of the spring-metal strip to lock the sash, a stop-pin secured in said locking-pin, and a coil-spring arranged upon said locking-pin between thestop-pin and the inner end of the recess in the sash-rail for holding said locking-pin in locking engagement with the metal strip, substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
