UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLF SOHULZE, OF LEIPSIC, GERMANY.
TIME-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,042, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed October 24,1898. Serial No. 694,457. (No model.)
T0 coZZ whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, RUDOLF SCHULZE, asubject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Leipsic, Saxony, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clockworks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention consists of improvements in clockworks for boiling eggs and similar purposes, as hereinafter particularly set forth.
In order to render the present specification more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged elevation of the clockwork; and Figs. 2 and 3 show the same in the form of an egg-boiler, one elevation, Fig. 2, showing the mainspring and escapement in engagement, and the other, Fig. 3, showing these parts out of engagement.
The first part of the invent-ion, relates to means for facilitating the winding up of the clockwork and the second part to means for giving a signal, either audible or for causing the whole clock to roll over after the same has been running for a certain predetermined length of time.
In the drawings, A is the balance-wheel; B, the pallet; O, the escapement-wheel, and c the escapement-pinion engaging the gear D, having a pinion d engaging the wheel E of the mainspring. In order to facilitate winding up the clock, the'intermediate gear D is supported in slotted bearings in the housingplates and held in contact with the escapement-pinion c by means of a spring I-I. Thus when the clockwork is wound up by means of a lever, such as F, the movement of the wheel E will push the pinion D away from the pinion a into the position shown in dotted lines at D, thus throwing the balance-wheel and escapement mechanism out of operation while the works are being wound up.
The arrangement or device for causing the clockwork to stop and give an audible signal or roll over when it has been running a cer= tain predetermined length of time consists in cutting away a portion of the teeth of the mainspring-wheel E, so that as soon as the clockwork has run the required time the main spring-wheel will on reaching the part without teeth be forced suddenly around on its axis, by which means the lever F will be violently struck against a bell or the like, or in the case of Figs. 2 and 3 the said lever may be caused to upset the balance of the eggshaped housing, so that the same will fall over. IVith this object in View the housing is made with a comparatively small base and the clockwork mounted high up within the.
same, so that on the lever F flying around the equilibrium will be destroyed and the clock will roll over. A stop G is advantageously provided for the lever F to prevent the spring from running entirely down at each operation. up the wheel D will be returned to its engagement with the pinion c by the spring H.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a clockwork the combination of a mainspring-wheel and a gear having movable hearings to mesh with said wheel and with the esoapement-pinion and a spring to normally hold said gear in engagement with the said pinion the said wheel-teeth being cut away at a part of the periphery and a lever fast on the said wheel substantially as described.
'2. The combination of a clockwork having an egg-shaped housing with comparatively small base, the said clockwork being mounted at the upper part thereof, and having the teeth of the mainspring-wheel cut away for a certain part of its circumference, a weighted lever fast on said wheel and a stop to limit the swing of the same substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLE SOI'IULZE.
