SEPARABLE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,973, dated June 13, 1899.
Application filed March 5, 1898.
is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is the construction of an easily-separable two-part fastening or hook for use on harnesses wherever hooks are ordinarily employed. It is especially fitted for securing the checkrein to the collar, for
. attaching the holdback-straps to the thills,
and for connecting the tugs to the whiffletree but although I refer to my fastening device as especially adapted for harnesses I do not design to restrict myself thereto for the reason that it is equally applicable for other places where it is desired to quickly link and unlink two parts.
Referring to the drawings formingpart of this specification, Figure 1 is a side View of my complete separable fastening. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the two, main parts thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the other part.
The two main portions of my device are preferably formed from spring-steel, being stamped or forged from the metal and suitably tempered. For diminutive fasteners of this character brass and other metals can be equally well adopted.
The section D of the fastening comprises the shank d, having the eye (1 at one end, and the spring-arm d, bent at d nearly parallel with the shank and formed with the catch-shoulder d and thumb-piece (1 The section A comprises the base a, having the hand a bent over at a nearly parallel therewith. Said base a is formed with the eye a at its outer end, in which swings the wire tie-strap B. More or lessof the lateral edges of the base A are turned up into guidewalls a, the use of which will be made clear later on. The extremity of the hand a is formed with the notch a in its upper surface and the catch-shoulder a in its under surface. The eye or ring 0 issimply slipped in place along the hand a and is designed for the attachment of the strap S. A strap S or other object to be made secure is fastenedin the eye (1 and my invention is ready for use. To

put it into use, the tie B is swung up and engaged in the notch a the based and hand a being pressed together far enough to permit such engagement. The section D is then inserted through said tie and in between the base a and hand a and pressed home until the catch-shoulder (Z has passed beyond and sprung into engagement with the catch-shoulder a as shown in Fig. 1. The fastening is now coupled and the two parts cannot be pulled apart by any strain within the limit for which they are designed. To retain the shank d in parallelism with the base a when said parts are thus in contact is accomplished by the guide-walls a above referred to. Without such guides the end 61 of the section D is liable to swing laterally outward and so render the appearance thereof less ornate.
To disconnect the sections one from the other, the eye 01 and the thumb-piece d are pressed toward each other with the fingers until the two catch-shoulders are disengaged, and the section D can then be readily withdrawn from the other.
can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
When in use, their engagement is sure and incapable of accidental detachment. They can be slipped together with the greatest ease, can be disengaged without hesitation or difficulty and'even with the gloved hand, and can be manipulated at night, no matter how dark, with perfect readiness. It is mainly for these reasons that I consider-this fastener as particularly Well adapted for the checkrein. The section A being permanently secured to the collar of the harness, all that need to be done when the horse is to be unchecked to drink is to press down upon the thumb piece 01 when the disconnection is instantly made. To check up the horse afterward, the section D is simply pressed into the section A until the two catches engage. Thus provided for the horse cannot become accidentally unchecked, as so oftenoccurs, and

ous parts are also adapted to be readily put together after being formed, and the entire arrangement makes a powerful, simple, easilyoperated, and durable fastener. Its construction is such also that while very strong and 'Well adapted for its work it is formed with the least possible amount of metal consistent with its purpose, and consequently makes the lightest and best-adapted device forharnesses and such like purposes.
WhatI claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
In a detachable fastening, the base, a, having one end coiled into the eye, a and having its opposite extremity prolonged and bent over nearly parallel therewith, said extremity being formed with the eatch-shouldeig'cfi, and notch, a and said base with the lateralversaid tie in engagement with said notch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention I have hereunto set my hand this 20. day of March, A. D. 1898.
