3e it known that I, EPHRAIM G. CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corvallis, in the county of Benton and State ofl Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

The invention has relation to gates; and the object is to provide simple, durable, and inexpensive means for opening and closing the gate and for holding the gate in either its open or closed position.

.Vith this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the gate open. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through the joint of the lockingbeam. Fig. 4 is a similar view through the post to which the locking-beam is swiveled.

In the drawings, l denotes the gate-posts, and 2 the gate. The gate is hinged to one of the posts, as shown, and in closing is adapted to swing into engagement with the other post.

5 denotes the locking-beam, which consists of two parts a and ZJ, secured together by a hinge G.

7 denotes a housing secured to one section of the locking-beam and adapted to cover and protect the hinge from dust, snow, sleet, the. The section a of the beam is hinged to the swivel-bail by a strap 8, and the section h of the beam is loosely connected to the gate, preferably by screw-eyes 9.

l0 denotes a sheave-beam secured to the gate-post. From one end of this beam is suspended a sheave ll and from the other end are suspended two sheaves 12 and 13. 14 denotes a rope or cord passing around the sheaves l2 and 13 and connected with the lockinggbeam, and l5 denotes a cord or rope passing around the sheave 11 and the sheave l2 and connected to the locking-beam. By pulling upon the free ends of the cords the gate may be opened from without or from` within.

In operation, assuming that the gate is closed, to open the same the free end of one of the cords or ropes is pulled downward. This breaks the jointed lever and draws it rearwardly and allows one part to overlap the other part, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In this position it will be impossible to close the gate unless one of the actuatingcords is operated. In closing the gate, by drawing upon the cord the locking-beam is raised and the two jointed ends swung around and then downward and inward until they assume a horizontal plane, by which time the free end of the gate has reached its post and will be held closed until the locking-bea1n is again broken at its joint.

Should it be desired to lock the gate permanently, so that a person from Without can not open it, I provide the under side of the section a of the locking-beam with a sliding bolt and the under side of the section b with a boltsreceiving staple, so that when the bolt is shot it will be impossible to break the beam, and therefore impossible to open the gate from without, or, for that matter, from within, unless the bolt is retracted. Any other fastening means that will accomplish the same purpose may be employed in lieu of the sliding bolt.

It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with the hinged gate, a locking-beam consisting of two parts hinged together, one end of the said locking-beam being connected to the gate, and the other having a hinged and swiveled connection with the post, and means for operating said locking-beam, and means for fastening the hinged joint of the locking-beam against being unlocked by the operating means, substantially as described.
