CLEAT FOR SECURING HALYARDS, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,230, dated J une 6, 1899.
Application filed April l2, 1899.
To all whom 172'; may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANKLIN HAwEs, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cleats for Securing Halyards, dsc., of which the follow-ingis a specification.
This improvement relates to cleats for securing halyards in a boat or vessel and ropes for awnings, iiagstalfs, tc., and it is particularly adapted for use in these and other connections where a double rope is employed, inasmuch as it provides for securing two ropes at the saine time.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts fully described below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan -view of a cleat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same with a rope or halyard secured or clamped in position, two of the posts being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the contrivance.
In Figs. l and 2 the cleat is in the position assumed when the rope or halyard is securely held. In Fig. 3 it is in the position assumed when open-that is to say, in which the rope or halyard is free to slip back and forth on either side.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a plate screwed at ci to a suitable base-say in the stern of a vessel. This plate has a central opening a', formed with a shoulder a, and from this opening there extends upvertically a tubular post A', integral with the plate A. A screw B extends up through the tubular post A', its head B being held by the shoulder a. This screw or bolt B is long enough to serve as a pivotfpin for the hub C of a pair of cams C, said hub being provided with the integral and oppositelyextending arms O. The cams@ extend horizontally from the lower portion O" of said hub.
D D represent two pairs of posts extending vertically from the plate A on opposite sides of the hub, said posts being provided with annular depressions or grooves D on a level with the cams C and the posts constituting Serial No. 712,699. (No model.)
each pair being set quite close together, as shown. The arms C are preferably set at right angles with the cams O--that is to say, they extend at right angles with the plain surfaces C'" of the hub O'.
By moving the handles into the position indicated in Fig. 3, in which they extend across the lines of posts D or between the posts of each pair, the surfaces 0 are made parallel with the lines of posts, so that the passages between them and the pairs of posts are sufficiently broad to allow the two ropes or two portions of one rope E to be inserted horizontally. As long as the device remains in the position indicated in Fig. 3 these ropes can be slipped back and forth within said passages; but when it is desired to prevent the rope from slipping the handle C" is turned so as to crowd the rope between the cams and the pairs of posts D,` jamming said rope into the grooves D' and forcing it or bulging it slightly outward between each of the posts constituting a pair. Thus the bite of the rope is positive and sure, and the rope or halyard cannot slip.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The herein-described improved cleat, comprising the base A provided with the vertical tubular post A'; the hub C rotating around said tubular post and provided with the cams C, intermediate plain surfaces O'" and a suitable handle; and the pairs of posts D extending up from said base outside the path of rotation of the cams, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described improved cleat, comprising the base A provided with the Ver tical tubular post A; the hub C' provided with the cams O, intermediate plain surfaces 0 and handle 0; the pivot B extending up through said tubular post and hub; and the pairs of posts l) extending up from said base and provided with the grooves or depressions D', all arranged substantially as set forth.
