UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK R. WATERS, OF OURAY, COLORADO.
MlNiNc-HAMMER.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,883, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed February 23,1899, Serial No. 706,548. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FREDERICK R. WATERS,
. of Ouray, in the county of Ouray and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Miningllammeigfof which the followingl is a specification.
In drilling in'mines the drill often sticks or wedges in the hole and its extraction ini volves more or less time and labor and is occasionally somewhat difficult.
It is the object of my invention to so con- Y struct the head of a miners hammer used for driving such drill as to enable it to be conveniently used for effecting removal of the drill with ease and despatch. To this end I provide the hammer-head with a central transverse groove extending across its outer side and adapted to ft upon or receive the body of the drill. The construction and manner of use of such hammer are as hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved hammer as in use, and Fig. 2 is a Vperspective view of the same.
The hammer-head A is provided with a deep transverse groove B, the same extending across its outer side and being formed in the body of the head, so that the latter has to receive the body of a drill.
thereto, as shown in Fig. l, so that the body of the drill lies partly in the groove B, which it traverses, the handle C being thus necessarily at right angles to the drill. Then by sliding the head A backward and forward on the drill a blow or series of blows may be delivered against the enlarged head of the drill, so that it is quickly extracted with little didiculty-that is to say, as the ham mer-head A is moved outward it strikes the langeof the drill-head, and thus applies to the drill an extractive blow of greater or less force. It will be noted that this operation is facilitated by 4around the eye or handle-socket.
1. A miners hammer having its head provided with a transverse groove extending across its outer side, the same being central or equidistant from its ends, which are simi lar in form and size, as shown and described 2,. A hammer-head for miners" use, having a transverse' groove in its outer side, the same being 7sunk in the body ofthe head, whereby the latter is adapted for use upon a drill, as
and for the purpose specilied. 1
