Description
Nirnn 'STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
JAMES JACKSON, OF HELENA, ALABAMA;l
REVERSIBLE ROTARY ENGINE.l
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters 'atent` No. 624,814, dated May 9, 1899. Application filed November 12, 1898. Serial No. 696,283. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the lcounty of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Rotary Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in reversible rotary steam-engines; and the ob-V ject is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient motor of -this character. Y
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement ofthe several parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention. V In said drawings, Figure l is a vertical 1ongitudinal section of my improved reversible rotary steam-engine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
l denotes the casing, 2 the steam-chest, and 3 the rotating drum, iixed on the shaft 4, journaled in suitable bearings xed on the removable side plates of the casing. -The drum 3 is formed with a continuous series of radial buckets 5 5 extending entirely around its periphery.
6 designates the upper exhaust-port, and 7 the lower exhaust-port, which also forms an v exit forthe Water ofcondensation which may form in the casing while the engine is in operation.
8 8 8 denote the live-steam ports, when the steam is admitted to rotate the drum in the direction of the arrow, and 9 9 9 the corresponding live-steam ports, which are in use when the engine is revolving in the opposite direction. Y
l0 denotes the slide or throttle valve, which more of the ports 8, the ports 9 remaining closed,`and, reversely, if it is desired to start the engine in the opposite direction'the valve is moved to the left to close the ports 8 and open the ports 9, which admit steam to the opposite side of the drum, thereby causing it 'to rotate in the direction opposite to the arrow.
It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of conL struction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacriicingany of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, isf- The combinationhin a reversible rotary stea`mengine, of the casing or cylinder, l, formed with the upper and lower exhaustports, 6 and 7, the drum, 3, mounted therein and formed With the radial buckets, 5 5, the steam-chest, 2, and the duplex series of di'- verging live-steam ports, 8 S 8 and 9 9 9, connecting the steam-chest andcylinder-casing, the slide-valve, l0, adapted to cover either series of live-steam ports independently, or both series simultaneously, substantially as shown and described.
vIn testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit nesses.
l JAMES JACKSON. Witnesses:
HENRY MIsoN, ALLEN MCCLELLAN.-
