BICYCLE LUGGAG E-CARR|ER.-
SIPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 624,669, dated May 9, 1899-.
Application filed January 17, 1899. Serial No. 702M441. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL L. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Rafael, county of Marin, State of California,
have invented an Improvement in Bicycle Luggage-Carriers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a luggage-carrier which is especially designed for use upon bicycles.
It consists, essentially, of a flexible netting, a rectangular frame, to which the upper edge of the netting is secured, the lower portion being closed, a bar having curved hooks, and loops adapted to engage the handle-bar and the vertical steering-post ofthe machine, so as to secure it thereto, said bar having loops formed in its ends, which are engaged by corresponding loops or links in the net-carrying bar, whereby the latter is allowed to fold and automatically adjust itself with relation to the frame of the machine and to anyload which may be placed in it.
The invention also consists'in a means for securing the central "link to the steering-post and in details of construction, which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my device to the bicycle handle-bar and fully opened out. Fig. 2 shows the frame only with its attachments. The dotted lines show it folded and out of use.
A is a rectangular frame, preferably made by bending a sufficiently rigid wire to form a front and two ends, and at the rear these B is a similar wire which forms the back of the frame and the attachment to the ban dle-bar. This wire has its end bent to form loops 1), which loosely connect with the loops (1, so that the bar A can turn freely about its connection with the bar B. The loops h are formed by bending the Wire B approximately at right angles with the bend of the loops 0., thence carrying the wire upward and forming curved hooks O, which are adapted to fit over the handle-bar of the machine, and these hooks are Prefer ably covered with rubber or other flexible coating to prevent marring of the bar or rat tling. The center of the bar Bis bent in re- .verse curves, as shown at D, being first carried backward to a depth somewhat greater than the diameter of the steering-post and then bent horizontally forward, the bight E forming a curvature of such diameter as to fit around the steering-post, and thus prevent any endmovement of the bar B after the ends have been put over the handle-bar F, as shown. This cental curve or bight E is also protected with rubber or other flexible material for the same reason as .previously described.
G is a network, preferably woven of sufficiently stout cords made in the manner of a fish-net and connected with the front and ends of the bar A and also with the bar B, so as to form an open-work back which depends from these supporting-bars.
- When the device is to be attached to the machine, it is only necessary to slip the bight E of the bar B over the approximately vertical standard-post and at the same time spring the bar B so'that the hooks O at the ends will hook over the handle-bar. The device is then held in place by the elasticity of the bar B, and when there is nothing in the net the bar A will swing downwardly by reason of the interlocking loops at b and will lie closely against the front of the steeringpost and entirely out of the way. Any article placed in the bag will cause the front of the, bag A to swing forward sufficiently to accommodate it, and if the bag be filled the bar A will stand approximately horizontal and retain the articles which are placed in the net. In some cases it will be found desirable to secure the bar B to the post by a permanent fastening. I have therefore shown ahook H pivoted to one side of the rear portion of the bight E, and the shank of the hook is long enough so that the hook may be made to engage the other side of the bight behind the steering-post, thus inclosing the latter and securing the bar B firmly in place. This is especially useful in applying the carrier to that class of machines in which the handlebars are very much dropped from the head toward the outer ends, and when thus secured too the outer ends of B may be bent downward, so as to be placed in any convenient or desired position.
I do not claim, broadly, a network or a rigid supporting-frame therefor; but,
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A luggage-carrier consisting of a frame forming the front and two ends, having eyes formed at the rear of the end sections, in combination with a bar forming the rear, said bar having eyes loosely engaging those of the ing a central bight formed by bending the bar backward and forward upon itself, hooks formed by bending the ends upon themselves so that hooks will clasp and engage the handle-bar and eyes formed in the bending of said hooks, a front bar approximately parallel with the previously-named bar having the ends bent at right angles and loops formed in said ends engaging the loops in the end of the first-named bar whereby the front bar swings freely in Vertical planes upon the rear one and automatically adjusts itself to the amount of the luggage carried and a network of interlaced cords forming a back, the upper edges of which are secured around the front and rear bars.
3. A luggage-carrier consisting of front and rear net-carryin g bars having their meeting ends swiveled together, hooks formed by bending the ends of the rear bar so as to engage the handle-bar, a central bight formed in said rear bar by folding the wire backward and forward upon itself and adapted to engage the steering-post of the machine, and a hook swiveled to one side of the said bight adapted to hook into the other side hehind the steering-post.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
VIRGIL L. MOORE.
