DAVID A. BACKUS, OF GROTON, NEW YORK.
GARM ENT-SUPPQ RTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,441, dated iviay 9, 1899.
Application filed April 28, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID A. BAoKIis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Groton, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
The object of the present invention is the provision of a ladys garment-supporter of novel construction which will be adapted for supporting both the hose and skirts in such an improved manner that the device will perform its functions most satisfactorily Without any discomfort to the wearer.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention are accomplished by the provision of improved hose-supporters in connection with a novel form of bustle and improved suspenders whereby the weight of the garments is borne by the shoulders of the wearer, all of said elements being of a detailed construction and coacting in the improved manner more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view showing the device in use, and Fig. 2 a perspective detail View of the complete invention.
A11 arc-shaped ribbon 1, of steel orother resilient material, constitutes the frame of the bustle, and 2 is a cross band or piece of webbing which extends from one extremity of this member to the other extremity thereof and is looped upwardly to a certain extent at the points where buckles 3 and 4c are connected to it, said cross-band being adapted to rest against the body ofthe-wearer, so as to form a support for the bustle at the point of contact of the bustle portion of the supporter. A pair of suspenders consisting of two loops 5 and 6 is employed, and the outer pieces of said suspenders are engaged with the buckles 3 and 4, so that the size of the loops can be varied, while the vertical back'or center piece of the suspenders is connected to the central part of the cross-band 2 at '7 and is then extended into ahorizontal portion 8,which is fastened to the center part of the resilient ribbon'l at 9. There are two Serial No. 679,127. (No model.)
- adjusting straps or bands 10 and 11, each hav the center piece of the suspenders, independ-- ent buckles 12 being employed at these points. Hose-suspending bands 13 and 14, of elastic material, which are prolongations of the crossband 2, depend from the extremities of the frame 1, and branch straps 15 and 16, having the usual hose-fasteners 17, are adjustably connected to the elastic suspending-bands by respective buckles 18 and 19.
In placing the device on the person the arms are slipped through the loops 5 and 6 and the suspending- bands 13 and 14 brought over the hips and connected to the front portions of the hose. It is clear that the weight of both skirts and hose is borne by the shoulders, which is decidedly advantageous, and quick and easy adjustment of all the parts can be had, when necessary, so that the device will properly fit the wearer and be perfectly comfortable. The adj usting-straps 10 and 11 afiord means for regulating the size and shape of the frame 1, so that the bustle can be made to suit the requirements of the occasion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is r In a garment-supporter, a band or ribbon of resilient material, a cross-band connect ing the ends thereof and having its ends extended to form hose-supports,-looped bands adj ustably secured to said cross-band between the ends of-the ribbon. and being also connected together to form a back or center piece which is secured to the middle points of the cross-band and the ribbon and independent adj usting-bands connecting the ends of the ribbon to that portion of the center band which is between the cross-band and the ribbon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID A. BACKUS.
