APPARATUS FOR ICING CAKES.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB SOHINNELLER, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Icing Cakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to apparatus for ap- IO plying icing to cakes.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple form of apparatus by means of which icing may be applied to cakes fed thereto in quick succession and with perfect uniformity of thickness, so that it is possible to handle large quantities in a short time without the employment of hand labor and at greatly-reduced cost.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section in elevation. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4 at, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged lon gitudinal section showing more clearly the mechanism for supporting the cake during the icing operation and for discharging it when iced. Fig. G'is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the machine, being taken on same line as Fig. i. Fig. 7 is a detail of mechanism for moving trays forward, and Fig. Sis a detail in perspective showing means for releasing cake from plate.

The letter A designates a suitable frame or support for the apparatus mounted on the base-blocks A. The main shaft Cb is mounted in suitable bearings a in the frame A, said shaft being driven by the pulley a connected up by belt to suitable source of power. A clutch a operated by the lever a is provided for throwing the shaft a into and out of connection with said pulley.
At each end of the shaft or are the eccentries b, whose rods Z) extend back and connect with the sliding pusher-frame O at Z1 This frame 0 is composed of the cross-bar c, with the bearings c at each end thereof engaging with the rods 0 on which said frame slides back and forth. The bar 0 is made in the form of a channel-bar, with the slot 0 formed therein. The pushers c are secured to the bar 0 by means of the bolts 0 Whose heads engage the bar on its interior, while the nuts a secure the pushers in position. The pushers have slots 0 by means of which said pushers may be adjusted longitudinally, according to the size of cakes they are to operate on. These pushers are arranged at intervals, and their number may be increased or diminished, according to the capacity of the apparatus.
Below the pushers. c are the pans d, which are made to conform to the size and shape of the cakes to be iced. It is into these pans that the cakes cl drop from the feed-boxes 01* when the pushers have been withdrawn. These feed-boxes are supported above the pans and the cakes are fed to them by means of the chutes d Within the chute d is the stop (1 which acts to arrest a cake which has been fed to the chute bottom up or which has become inverted in its course down the chute.
As the cakes illustrated have rounded bot- 8o toms, if they become inverted they will not fit the rounded bottom of the chute, but Will extend up above the stop (1 The boxes cor respond in size and shape to the size and shape of the cakes, and as the cakes are fed thereto they arrange themselves one on top of the other in the manner illustrated.
Above the pushers c is the plate or table e, supported by the frame in any suitable manner. This plate ehas the openings 6 formed therein, corresponding substantially in size andshape to the cakes and in line with the pushers c. Other plates with openings of different size and shape may of course be substituted for the plate illustrated.
A hopperfis arranged transversely of the plate 6 and is adapted to move across said plate. A reciprocating movement is imparted to the hopper f bymeans of the eccentrics g on the shaft (0. Rods g connect said eccentrics with the hopper f at each end thereof.
Below the plate e in line with each opening e are the cake-supporting blocks h, upon which are supported the cushions h',of spongerubber or other suitable material. These blocks h are carried by the rocking frame 1', supported by the arms 7.: in the manner more fully hereinafter set forth. Boltsj enter the blocks 71, from below and flanges j on said bolts bear against the lower faces of said blocks. The bolts pass through openings in the upper and lower bars 2" i of the frame 1', while a threaded collar 7' engages the upper threaded opening 2' in theupper bar a" of the frame. This collarj has the head 1' for the purpose of turning said collar. In this manner the height of the blocks may be regulated. On the lower ends of the boltsj are the jamnuts 3'".
The rocking frame i, as above set forth, is pivoted at its ends to the arms 7c. These arms k are pivoted at their forward ends, as at 7t, to the frame A, the rear ends of said arms fitting in the guides k The set-screw k regulates the downward movement of the rear ends of said arms. In the rocking framed are the set-screws 25 which are adapted to come in contact with the arms 75 as said frame is raised and move said arms until they are stopped by the guides 73, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
Secured to the shaft Z, journaled in the frame A, is the lever m, the forward end of said lever having the projection m, adapted to engage the cam 02, on the shaft ct. A releasing device is employed to prevent the cakes from adhering to the plate 6 after the icing operation. This device consists of the arm 4*, secured to the shaft 3. The forward en d of the arm 0' has the stud 0'', adapted to be engaged by the knocker r on the collar 1' on the shaft a. Secured to the shaft 3 are the arms 5, which extend rearwardly therefrom. These arms .9 pass underneath the plate 6, and at their rear ends are the inwardly-projecting lips 3 which are adapted to engage the edges of the cakes, as shown in Fig. 8, so that upon each revolution of the shaft a the knocker 1' will raise the arm r and lower the arms 3 with their lips .9 This movement of said lips will act to release the cakes in case they adhere to the plate e after the blockshave been partially withdrawn.
Underneath the frame A is the conveying device for receiving and carrying away the cakes coming from the chutes p. The trays t for receiving the iced cakes move in the guideway 13. An endless chain at on the sprocketwheels at has projections a extending out therefrom, adapted to engage the trays and carry them forward by an intermittent movement. On the sprocket-wheel shaft 1) is the ratchet v. the pawl 10' pivoted thereto, with the spring 10 pressing against same. WVhen the tray has been filled with cakes, it is necessary to move it forward a sufficientdistance so that the succeeding tray may be moved a corresponding distance to clear the end pieces of both trays and deposit the cakes properly in the box. For this purpose the arm 10 has a greater throw than is necessary to drop from tooth to tooth of the ratchet. One of the teeth r covers a greater space on the circumference of the ratchet than the others, so that when it is caught by the pawl it will revolve the shaft 1 and consequently sprocket u, a greater distance than at other times, so that the trays t are moved a sufficient distance to allow for the cakes plus the width of the two end pieces of the trays.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The cakes are fed to the boxes (1 and the icing or other material of the proper consistency is introduced into the hopper f. Meanwhile the blocks h have been raised into position substantially level with bottoms of pans d to receive the cakes, and it is upon the cushions of these blocks that the cakes now rest. By the mechanism hereinafter referred to the blocks are further elevated to the plate 6. Bythis time the eccentrics g are in position to move back the hopper f over the plate 6. The hopper travels back and over the openings c, under which the cakes rest. The icing is deposited on the cakes and then the eccentrics g draw forward the hopper, leaving a layer of icing on the cakes corresponding to the thickness of the plate (2. The movement of the hopper in close contact with the plate 6 and across the openings e leaves an even and uniform deposit of the icing on each cake. The cushioned blocks prevent the breaking of the cakes, as if there is undue pressure brought to bear on the cakes said blocks will yield. During this operation the cam 77. has been moving with its regular periphery it moving in contact with the projection m on the lever m, whereby the blocks 76 are held up in position during the icing operation; but after the hopper has passed back and forth the cam portion n of the cam it now moves into contact with the projection m of the lever m. This permits said lever to assume the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5, whereupon the arms 0 are lowered, and with them the rocking frame 2' is first slightly lowered in vertical plane and then tilted together with the blocks it. During this first slight downward movement of the blocks, if the cakes should adhere to the lower face of theplate, the lips s on the arms .5" will act to release the cakes from said plate, so that they are carried down by said blocks. By then tilting the blocks in the manner shown they are brought into such position with reference to the chutes p as to discharge the cakes into said chutes, whence they pass down the trays t in regu lar order, to be carried away in the manner above set forth. After the cakes have been discharged from the blocks h the cam has revolved sufficiently to bring the cam portion a into contact with the end of the lever m, when said blocks, together with the rocking frame t', begin to move back to their original position to receive the next lot of cakes to be iced. This movement of the rocking frame continues until the blocks have been brought back to substantially a horizontal position, and while the blocks are being brought back the pushers 0 push the cakes onto the blocks, so that when the blocks have arrived at a horizontal position the cakes will be resting thereon. A further revolution of the cam it brings the cam portion 71. into contact with the lever m. Having by the previous movement of the cam 0?, brought the blocks to a horizontal position it is desirable to elevate the blocks evenly in a vertical plane, so that the cakes will have all points of their upper surface presented for icing at the same time. To accomplish this,the rocking frame 11 is hinged to the arms k, which are free to move upand down in the guides 75, the amount of their movement being regulated by the set-screw k After the rocking frame 1' has been brought to its horizontal position the set screws 10 are in contact with the arms 7c, so that any further inovement imparted to said frame by the lever Z must be in a vertical plane, as the set-screws raise the arms kin their guide 10 Then, therefore, the cakes have been deposited onto the blocks 71., the cam portion a of cam it moves into contact with the arm m, whereupon the blocks are elevated in a vertical plane until they bring the cakes up against the lower face of the plate 6 in line with the openings 6. The hopper f again travels back and forth to apply a layer of icing to the cakes as before. In the above manner the cakes are iced in rapid succession, the
only requirement in the Way of manual labor being an attendant to feed the cakes to the apparatus. The icing is applied with even thickness to all the cakes, and an even smooth surface is imparted to each cake.
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction illustrated, as that may be modified without affecting the scope of my invention. Furthermore, I wish to include all uses to which the apparatus may be found applicable, and do not wish to restrict it simply to the icing of cakes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, and charging mechanism in line with said support, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, and mechanism for tilting said support, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a'hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for tilting said support, and mechanism for elevating said supportvertically, 'sIubstan-' tially as set forth.
4. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a tilting frame beneath said table, a support on said tilting frame, a shaft, a cam on said shaft, and connections between said cam and said tilting frame, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a tilting frame beneath said table, a support on said tilting frame, a shaft, a cam on said shaft, a lever in the path of said cam and actuated thereby, and connections between said lever and said tilting frame, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a tilting frame beneath said table, a support on said tilting frame, a shaft, a cam on said shaft, a lever in the path of said cam and actuated thereby, a rock-shaft on which said lever is mounted, and an arm on said shaft engaging said tilting frame, substantially as set forth.

The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a tilting frame beneath said table, a support on said tilting frame, a shaft, a cam on said shaft, a lever in the path of said cam and actuated thereby, a rock-shaft on which said lever is mounted, an arm on said shaft, and a trunnion on said tilting frame with which said arm engages, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a swinging arm, a tilting frame on said arm, a support on said tilting frame, and mechanism for tilting said frame and raising it up into position, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a swinging arm, a tilting frame on said arm, a support on said tilting frame, said tilting frame moving in the path of said swinging arm and adapted to raise same, and mechanism for tilting said tilting frame and raising it up in position, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a swinging arm, a stop for said arm, a tilting frame on said arm, a support on said tilting frame, a set-screw on said tilting frame adapted to engage said arm and raise same and mechanism for tilting said frame and raising it up in position, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, and a releasing device adapted to release the article.

The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, releasing arms adapted to engage the article on said support, and mechanism for raising and lowering said arms, substantially as set forth.
13. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, a shaft, releasing-arms on said shaft, a rocker-arm on said shaft, and mechanism for rocking said arm, substantially as set forth.

The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a supportbeneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, a shaft, releasing-arms on said shaft, a rocker-arm on said shaft, a main shaft, and a knocker on said main shaft adapted to engage said rockerarm, substantially as set forth.
15. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, a shaft, releasing-arms on said shaft, inwardly-extending lips on said arms, a rocker-arm 011 said shaft, a main shaft, and a knocker on said main shaft adapted to ei'igage said rocker-arm,

16. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, ahopper above said table, mechanism for moving said hopper back and forth over said opening, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering said support, a pusher in line with said support, and mechanism for advancing and withdrawing said pusher, substantially as set forth.
17. The combination with a suitable frame,
of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, a main shaft, connections between said shaft and said hopper for reciprocating same, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering same, achute in line with said support, a carrier at the lower end of said chute and mechanism for imparting an intermittent movement to said carrier,substantially as set forth.
18. The 00 mbination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, a main shaft, connections between said shaft and said hopper for reciprocating same, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering same, a chutein line with said support, a carrier at the lower end of said chute and connections between said main shaft and said carrier, whereby said carrier is advanced a certain distance at one revolution of said shaft and an increased distance at another, substantially as set forth.
19. The combination with a suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a 110pper above said table, a main shaft, connections between said shaft and said hopper for reciprocating same, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raisingand lowering same, a chute inline with said support, a carrier at the lower end of said chute,asprocketwheel, an endless chain engaging said carrier, a ratchet on said sprocket-wheel, said ratchet having an increased distance between two of its teeth,an arm on the sprocket-wheel shaft, a pawl on said arm engaging said ratchet, and connections between said arm and said main shaft, whereby an oscillating movement is imparted to said arm, substantially-as set forth.
20. The combination witha suitable frame, of a table having an opening therein, a hopper above said table, a main shaft, connec tions between said shaft and said hopper for reciprocating same, a support beneath said opening, mechanism for raising and lowering same, a chute in line with said support, a carrier at the lower end of said chute, and a yielding guard at the lower end of said chute, substantially as set forth.
