UNIT-ED I STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN F. FAIRMAN, OF HASTINGS, NEBRASKA.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,213, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed January 27, 1899- $911'MNO- 7 1 7- (N l- I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. FAIRMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and practical fastening device for securing in place the end-gates of wagons; and it consists in a device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed. Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the rear end of a wagon-body, showing the end-gate in place and the fastening device connected thereto; Fig. 2, a rear end view showing the casing of the fastening device in section and also a portionof the bottom of the wagon-body; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing the detail fastening device which carries the two bolts. In the accompanying drawings, A represents the wagon-body, and B .the end-gate, detachably connected to the transverse brace a by means of strap-hinges, comprising the hooked straps b and staples c, with which said hooks engage.
Any suitable means may be provided for detachably hingin g the end-gate to the transverse brace as found best adapted to the purpose.
The fastening device is spring-actuated and comprises the hand-lever O, pivoted at 61 within a suitable casing D, said lever having the two short bolts 6. These bolts extend through perforations in a friction-plate f, secured to the upper side of the bottom of the wagon-body, and extend into similar perforations g, formed in said bottom. These perfogate raised in dotted lines; Fig. 4, a
rations in the bottom of the wagon-body extend through the same to allow any gravel or dirt to pass out, and thereby prevent any accumulation thereof which would clog or fill up said perforations and prevent the bolts from entering same. The bolts 6 are retained perspective view of the lever of thein engagement with the perforations by means of a suitable spring E, which bears down upon the hand-lever 0, one end of said spring being seated in a notch h, formed in the upper side of the lever, and the opposite end of the spring bearing against the under side of the casing D. The free end of the hand-lever 0 extends through a guide-slot t in one end of the easing, which guides the lever in its movement and prevents any lateral movement thereof, thereby bringing the bolts at all times on a line withtheperforations, whentheyautomatically engage themselves with the perforations.
If desired, a support k may be provided for the outer end .of the lever when the bolts are in a locking position.
The employment of the two bolts upon a single lever forms a most perfect fastening device that will securely lock the end-gate in a closed position, thereby providing a selflocking end-gate that will possess the necessary strength and durability.
The end-gate, being detachably connected to the transverse brace, hereinbefore described, can be either swung up out of the way or detached from its hinged connections and removed from the wagon-body, as cir= cumstances require.
Any number of bolts upon the hand-lever may be employed, and any suitable spring may be used that will render the lever springactuated.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hinged and detachable end-gate and a fastening device connected thereto, said device comprising a pivoted spring-actuated hand-lever, bolts upon the under side of the lever and adapted to engage with perforations in the bottom of the wagon-body, anda casing inclosing the operating parts and having a guide-slot at one end through which the end of the lever extends, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. FAIRMAN.
