DRESS-PROTECTING EDGING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,328, dated February 14, 1899. Application filed January 31,1898. Serial No. 668,599. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL MITTELSTEN SCHEID, asubject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 58 Diekerstrasse, Barmen, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Protecting Edging; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide in a dress-protecting edging, in addition to the actual velvet wearing border and band which serves to attach said border to the edge of the skirt by means of stitching, a second velvet border for the protection of the said band and stitching. This construction obviates a great disadvantage in previously-known dress-protecting edgings with velvet top in that in these previous articles the attachmentband and threads necessary for sewing it on were left perfectly exposed and subjected by the trailing of the dress to considerable wear, necessitatinga frequent renewal of the dressprotector without allowing the complete using up of the actual protecting-edging.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved edging; Fig. 2, an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 a portion of the edging in position attached to-the edge of the skirt.

a represents the velvet brush, which is the actual protector, extending, as in Fig. 3, slightly below the skirt edge. This brush is attached to the skirt by means of the woven band 0, which surrounds the upper edge of the velvet brush, and by the stitching, which passes through both brush and band and the skirt edge itself.

1) indicates a second velvet brush which is attached to the band 0 above the same and slightly overhanging it, (see Fig. 2,) thus serving as a protection for it.

The band a surrounds the lower edge of the brush 1), as it does the upper edge of (1., thus serving to hold both together and attach them to the skirt.

The example shown in the drawings is produced in the loom, and the plush edges a and 6 represent brush plushes. The production may, however, be effected by the band proc= ess or by the crocheting-machine and the plush edges be formed by cord or chenille plush. In any case the shape or size of the two plush edges may be alike or different and the band between the edges made as desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a dress-protecting edging, the combination of a lower brush of velvet to receive the actual Wear, an upper brush of the same ma terial and a band between said brushes sur= rounding both the upper edge of the lower brush and lower edge of the upper brush, connecting the two together and serving as a means of attachment to the skirt, said upper brush overhanging said band, so as to prevent wear upon the same, substantially as set forth.
