To an whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARTWELL ALEXANDER OROsBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Calais, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mucilage- Bottles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7

This invention relates to improvements in mucilage-bottles or receptacles for holding and dispensing viscous substances, and has for its object to provide a device of this character that will prevent mucilage, for instance, from hardening and which will at all times be in readiness for use.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figures 1 and 2 are views taken at right angles to each other and showing a longitudinal section of the receptacle and an elevation of the parts contained therein, and Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken on the lines 3 3 and 4 4: of Figs. 1 and 2.

In said drawings, 1 indicates the receptacle, of familiar shape, having a removable cap 2 at one end, said cap being tapered and having an opening or mouth at its end. Situated Within the cap is a tapered stopper 3, having a slotted rearwardly-projecting stem 4. The forward end of a spring 5 is secured within the slotted portion of said stem and extends to the rear end of the receptacle, against which it bears and thereby holds the stopper 3 under tension in the mouth of the cap and closes the same. The said stopper is provided with an elastic band or packingring 6, secured within a groove therein, and in cross-section the stopper is preferably ellipticaland the mouth-of the cap of corresponding shape. The spring 5 closes the stopper as soon as the pressure is relieved, and the mucilage can be distributed by means of the brush, its corrugations serving to spread the same. By a slight pressure a further supply of mucilage is secured, as is understood.

The device is a simple durable inexpensive receptacle and dispenser for viscous substances. It is clean and convenient and does not become clogged up with hard glue, and

the brush being non-porous is always pliable and ready for use and having the corrugations effectually distributes and spreads the substance.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device of the class herein described, comprising a tubular receptacle closed at one end and provided at the other with aconical detachable cap, the apex of which is open, anda tapered spring-operated stopper fitted in said cap, said stopper being provided 'at its outer end with a brush which projects through the opening in the cap, said brush being composed of rubber or similar material, and provided with longitudinal grooves in the sides thereof, and said stopper being provided at the sides thereof with projecting fingers between which the brush is placed, substantially as shown and described.
