IMPROVEMENT' 1N Tor-DRIVERS on spinners,
die Sttemle rifarsi tt in their Entert atmt ant-making pnt nf tti same.
To LL WHCMY v1T MAY CCNCERN: Y Y
Be it known that I, CHARLES PAGE, of West Meriden, inthe countyof New Haven,`and State of Gonnecticut,.have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Top-Spinners or Drivers, of which the follow ling is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming. part of this specification, and in whichl Figure 1 represents in `elevation a toy top with my improved driver applied thereto. Figure 2, a topview of the driver; and d Figure 3,7a horizontal section of the same. Like letters'indicate like parts throughout the several figures,
My improvement has reference to that description of toy tops-in whichn cord or it's'equivalent is used in` connection with a detachable handle for giving a spinning motion to the topbyV drawing on the-cordy which is connected with the handle, and by its friction on a spindle attached to or in gear with the top, made to' rotate the latter. Drivers or spinners for 4thus operating tops have been variouslyV constructed, including doubleords and reversible spindles by'turning the handle for-facilitating a :repetition -of theaction, but this, my invention, essentially differs from all suc'h previous arrangements,'in dispensing with awinding andun'wiuding action of the cord, and in other respects; and the nature of'my invention consists in a combination cfa tape or cord with friction-pressers or rollers arranged in the handle of the driver, and between which-the tape is passed and turned over the front presser, thatthrough a spindle or socket attachment gears with the top, sothat on' drawing on the tape it is made to'rotate the latter. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a topof the character herein referred to, and B the I handle ofthe driver that isl provided at its forward end with presscrs or rollers b b', both of which may` be` hung on axes or spindles Vc c', so as toV be capable of rotation, the one of them, which by a spindle `or socket gears with the top, necessarily so. These rollers b b are .preferably made of India rubber or elastic material, or the one roller only may have an elastic action, and-are so arranged as to grip or throw friction on a' tape, C, pased in between them. The spindle c ot" the one roller or presser may either be of socket construction, so as to receive in suitable driving and detachable gear with it a spindle or stem projecting from the top, or may be of spindle form to ita socket inthe top, and may either be single or double, so as in the latter case to operate from hoth ends by reversing the handle; diiferent forms of top shanks requiring different` driving attachments'. In the drawing, an extension of the spindle c at bothends is shown for'double or reverse action 'of the tape C by turning the handle over and pulling alternately on opposite endsof the tape to facilitate a repetitionV of the spinning motion. Where said spindle, however, is only made to project from one end, `the tape is drawn back without reversing the handle to repeat the action; The top shank or socket d, has a locking-no,tch,`e, in it for the driving-pin or pins f, of the spindl c', to form a'driving and detachable locking gear with the top, as well understood. The action being the same, bwhether the driver be made reversible for double action,"as described,
it will suiiice here to refer to the operation as confined to asingle action only. supposing the spindle c' to be in gear with the top, andthe cord o1` tape C to be dawn through the rollersA b b, and its short end tui-ned over the front roller b4', as represented in fig. 3, then by quickly drawing on said short end, with,` say, the thumb applied to slight pressure or'hold, with facility for slip of thefother portion on or againstthehandle, the top will he rotated with great speed, when it can be detached from the handle to spin on the door or other surface as' usual with such tops. By this construction of driver and mode of operation, it'will be seen'that there is no winding or,coiling of the cord round and round the driving spindle; hence there is no slack cord at starting toV tighten on the'spindle ere a quick velocity canfbe obtained; consequently4 a greater speed may by this arrange-` mentV be got up from the commencement, while the construction of the driver is simple, there being but few holes to drill, and its action for repetition' of the spinning motion, cvcn when not made double acting or reversible, easy and rapid.
'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t e The combination ofthe cord or tape,.with the pressers or rollers, and the driving-spindle arranged in ,the handle of the driver for operation,- substantially as specified.
