GUM-ELASTIC -TOP FOR STOCKINGS.

Be it known that I, RoRERT GU'rscHn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Ornamental Gum-Elastic Tops for Stockings and Sweaters, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to combine a gum-elastic woven section with a knitted stocking, legging, or sweater in such a manner that it will not only act as a retainerI in the case of a stocking or a turtle-neck in the case of a sweater, but also be highly ornamental, as it will be understood that a woven fabric can be ornamented more highly than a knitted fabric.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l isA a side view of a golf-stocking made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, of the top of the stocking, showing the woven gum-elastic section attached; and Fig. 3 is a View of the neck of a sweater, illustrating my invention.

Heretofore in the manufacture of garments having a terminal opening, such as golf-stockings and sweaters, the turned-down portion forming the head of the stocking or the turtle-neck of the sweater was made of the same material and knitted in the same manner as the body of the stocking or sweater, and

these sections arenot elastic, but are simply yielding, and in time both become baggy. Separate garters are used to confine the stocking to the leg at the upper end. Furthermore, these sections of the stocking or sweater are limited in ornamentation owing to the fact that they are made of knitted fabric and as it is now the style to use as much decoration as possible on the golf-stocking a woven ornamental top is desirable.

In carrying out my invention in the manufacture of a stocking or legging I knit the body A in the ordinary manner, and I weave the section B in a loom similar to that used in making Suspenders, using gum elastic strands in the body 0f the woven fabric, and I ornament the face as desired, preferably leaving the back plain. This section I make in proper lengths and secure itat m to the upper edge o. of the knitted body of the stocking by stitching, and I also secure the two edges of the gum-elastic section together at y, and I preferably so make the design that it will be continued across this joint y, so that the design will be continuous around the stocking.

lVhen the section B is turned down, as shown, it not only forms the ornamental top of the stocking, but also the garter for holding the stocking in position.

The sweater, as shown in Fig. 3, is made in the same manner, the body A of the sweater being of knitted fabric and the tur'- tle-neck B of woven fabric secured to the knitted fabric by stitching. The turtle-neck being made of gum-elastic will not become enlarged and baggy, but will always iit neatly around the neck.

The one great objection to the ordinary sweater having a closed neck is that it has to be drawn over the head, and the neck-section consequently is stretched, and in time this neck-section becomes baggy, and the purpose for which it was intended-that is, to tightly iit around the neck and prevent the wearer catching cold-is defeated. My improved gum-elastic woven neck-section can be highly ornamented in the same manner as the topsection of the stocking and can be applied to any garment having a terminal opening.

I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture,the hereindescribed garment having a terminal opening, consisting of a knitted body portion of ordinary yarns and an elastic strip composed of interwoven yarns and gum-elastic strands, the said strip having its ends secured together and having one edge secured to the knitted body portion, thus forming an elastic webbing of woven material around the terminal opening, substantially as described.
