Description

No. 65,260. Patented Dec. 6, I898.
F. Gun
WIRE FE G (Appiication filed July 98.3
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
FREDERIC A. CURTIS, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- FOURTHS TO BENJAMIN B. CAMPBELL, ALBERT A. CAMPBELL, AND THOMAS B. CAMPBELL, OF SAME PLACE.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,260, dated December 6, 1898.
Application filed July 29, 1898.
To all whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC A. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smooth-VVire Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of smooth or barbless wire fences; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable fence of this character.
To this end the invention consists in the construction and combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings show my-invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of myimproved wire fence. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the vertical wire stays before it is secured to the fencewires. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same after it is fixed in place on the fence-wires.
1 and 2 denote the horizontal parallel fencewires, which are supported at intervals upon suitable fixed posts. (Not shown.) The top and bottom wires 1 1 are each formed with a series of semiloops or offsets 3 3, arranged at regular intervals in the same plane and extending in the same lateral direction. The intermediate parallel wires are also formed.
Serial No. 687,179. (No model.)
with a corresponding series of semiloops 4 4, formed on the same sideand opposite to those on the wires 1 1, and with an intermediate series of loops 5 5, extending laterally in the same'plane and in the opposite direction to the loops 4 4.
6 6 denote the stay-wires, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, and each end is turned back upon the body portion to form an open eye 7 which engages the oppositely-arranged loops 3 and 4 on the fence-wires 1 and 2 and the correspondingly-alined loops on the intermediate fence-wires 2 2.
After these stay-wires have been placed in position on the fence-wires, as above indicated, the open ends are then closed around the fence-wires to form the closed eyes 8 8, which completely encompass the fence-wires, as shown in Fig. 3. This construction forms a very simple, strong, and durable fence, neat and ornamental in appearance and of sufficient strength to stand any strain to which a fence. of this character may be subjected.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp g In combination, the fence-wires l 1, formed with the lateral offsets 3 3, arranged on the same side of the wires, the intermediate fencewires 2 2 formed with the oppositely-disposed offsets 4 5 alternately arranged on opposite sides of said fence-wires, and the stay-wires 6 6 formed with the eyes 8 8 connecting the vertically alined offsets on the adjacent fencewires, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERIC A. CURTIS.
Witnesses:
