Description

No. 6l4,858., Patented Nov. 29, I898.. R. GROVE.

(No Model.)
lwue ntoz M g/gmwz 11 fl Grim/aw NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD GROVE, OF SALEM, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO W'ILLIAM BUMBAUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
DUST=PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,858, dated November 29,1898.
Application filed March 19, 1898. Serial No. 674,527. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a View showing the dust-pan in position for use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the dust-pan suspended. Fig. 3 is a view showing the position of the handle and dustpan to be emptied of its contents. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the hand and handle connection. Fig. 5 shows the hand and handle connection or bracket properly connected.
The present invention has relation to'dustpans; and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the dust-pan proper, which is provided with the bottom 2, which bottom is substantially V' shape in the outline and is provided with a top or cover and, as shown, said cover is provided with the top V-shaped portion 3 and the V-shaped parts 4 and 5, which parts or sections, together with the bottom, converge to the point 4:.
To the portion 3 of the cover is attached the arm 6 by means of the clamping-bolt 7 or its equivalent. The arm 6 is extended downward from the top of the cover and curved outward, substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and to the lower end of the arm is pivotally attached the handle 8, which handle is formed of such length that the dust-pan proper can be used with convenience. The
upper end of the arm 6 is provided with finger-hold 9, which finger-hold is for the purpose of grasping the arm 6 and the handle 8, as indicated in Fig. 3, thereby providing an easy way of emptying the dust-pan of its 0011- tents.
The arm 6 is formed of such a length that when the dust-pan proper is lifted from the floor it will assume the position illustrated in Fig. Zand in which position the dust or other material will be held within the dustpan. I
\Vhen it is desired to empty the dust-pan of its contents, the handle Sis tilted backward, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and emptied.
It will be understood that by removing the arm 6 the dust-pans can be nested one within the other, reducing the bulk in shipping.
The top or upper end of the handle 8 may be provided with the eye 10, for the purpose of suspending the dust-pan by means of a nail or its equivalent.
It will be understood that by providing the flat V-shaped portion 3 a convenient surface is provided for advertising purposes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the combination of a dust-pan consisting of the bottom, the cover portions 3, l and 5, all of said parts converging to a common center, the arm provided with a finger-hold and a handle pivoted to said arm, at a point below the upper portion of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the aboveI have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of the witnesses.
RICHARD GROVE. Witnesses:
