s'r'ECIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,428,01at'ed. November 15, 1898. Application filed December 27 ,1897. Serial No. 663,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR I-IUMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a match or cigarette box, the object being to provide a device of this description which can be operated to eject one match or cigarette at a time and which when empty can be more easily refilled than has heretofore been possible; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of a match box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the end opposite that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal'section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a top plan view. Fig. Sis a section on the line 8 8 of Fig.1. Fig. 9 is a top plan View of the spring. Fig. 10 is a horizontal section on the line 10 10 of Fig. 1. Fig. 11 is a fragmentary detail view, part-lyin elevation and partly in section, showing a compartment underneath the main receptacle and a hinged cover therefor. Fig. 12 is a sectional View of a cigarette-box constructed in accordance with my invention.
My present invention is designed as an improvement upon the match-box forming subj ect of an application for patent filed by Gottlieb I-Iochstrasser on the 20th day of May, 1893, Serial No. 474,979, the object in view being to simplify the construction of said box and provide more suitable means for filling the same.
To this end I provide a box or receptacle A, composed of stamped sheet metal, which may be made in any desired manner, in accordance with the judgment ofthe die-maker, to use as little metal as possible consistent with necessary strength. As the blanks may be of numerous different shapes and bent in various ways to form a box or receptacle of the desired size and shape and as this forms no part of my invention, I have omitted detailed illustration and description thereof. To one of the side walls of said box or recep-' tacle A a plate B is pivotally secured by means of the rivet C and at its other end carries an inwardly projecting lug D, which passes through a slot E in said side Wall of said box A, to which said plate B is pivoted, said slot being formed on an arc of a circle whose center is the rivet C. The interior of said box or receptacle A is of a height and width sufficient to accommodate one match or a row of matches, which are forced or moved toward the slotted end of the box by means of the spring F, which bears at its other end against the hinged rear end G of said box, which is firmly locked in place by means of the spring-catch H, formed by incisions 1 in the upper wall 2 of said box. The false bot tom 3 of said box is provided adjacent said slot E with a recess or depression 4, in which said lug D is adapted to be normally seated. By means of said depression 4 said matches are adapted to be successively moved into position over said lug D, so that by turning said plate B to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 6, said matches will be successively ejected through the opening 5 in the forward end of the upper wall 2 of said box.
The operation and general constructive features of this box coincide with those of the Hochstrasser device above mentioned, the difference lying in the hinged rear end G which I provide and by means of which the filling of the box is made Very simple and easy, it being only necessary to release said rear end Gfrom its engagement with said spring-catch H, when it will spring back and allow the spring F to be removed. Matches are then inserted, and when a sufficient number of same are in place the spring F is reinserted and said rear end G swung into engagement with said catch I-I.
In Fig. 12 I have illustrated my device as applied to a cigarette-box which coincides in construction with said match-box, except in size and in the depth of the space underneath the false bottom, which I utilize as a matchbox adapted to bear against said hinged real safe and provide With a hinged bottom 6 for end and against matches adapted to be conthat purpose. tained in said box to move same to the for- I 5 I claim as my inventionward end thereof, and means forsuccessively 5 A match-box comprising a box or receptaejecting each of said matches, substantially ole provided with a hinged rear end adapted as described. to be engaged by a spring-catch formed by In testimony whereof I affix my signature making two incisions in the rear end portion in presence of two Witnesses.
of the top Wall of said box to form a tongue VICTOR I-IUMANN. IO having an upwardly-turned rear end adapted WVitnesses:
to engage a hook on the upper end of said ERWIN J. LOTZ,
hinged rear wall of said box, a spring in said VVM. B. SNOWHOOK.
