COVER FOR BOOKS, 800.
' PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,302, dated November 15, 1898.
Application filed January 18, 1898. Serial No. 667,031. (No model.)
T0 (2% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, (Brooklyn) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and usefullmprovementin Covers for Books and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
My invention relates to covers for books or similar articles; and its object is to provide a cover that can be economically made, that can be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the book or other article to be protected, that will afford complete protection from soiling and from wear, that when once applied will be held securely and firmly in place, and that will be efficientin service and neat in appearance.
My invention consists, first, in the combination of side flaps and an end flap, of which flaps two are provided with slots adapted to register with each other when the cover is folded upon the book, and the thirdis provided with a tongue adapted to pass through the slots in the otherflaps, whereby the three flaps are readily brought together in proper position upon the book and locked in that position.
My invention also consists in providing the flap bearing the tongue with a suitable slot through which the tongue can be passed after it has been passed through the slots in the other flaps.
My invention also consists in providing two of the flaps with two slots, each adapted to register with one another when the cover is folded upon the book, and in providing the third flap with a slot adapted to register with two of the slots in the other flaps, so that at this place there will be three slots registering with one another, one in each flap, and in providing the third flap with a tongue also, this tongue being adapted to be passed first through the two slots in the other flaps registering with each other and then to be bent back and to be passed through the three slots, one in each fiap, registering with one another.
My invention also consists of certain other features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanyingv drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the cover unfolded at both ends or what might be termed the coverblank. Fig. 2 shows the cover after it has been folded together and the tongue passed through the slots. Fig. 3 is across-sectional view of a book having the cover applied thereto, taken on a line passing through the middle of the tongue.
Similar numbers refer to similar parts in the different figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the blankready to be folded so as to form the cover. Both ends of the cover can be made alike, so that they can be opened out or folded and fasiened together, or one end can be made in the usual way and the parts permanently fastened together and the other end adapted to be opened and closed, as hereinafter eX- plained. In the drawings I have shown the latter form.
2 3 are side flaps adapted to be folded over the cover of the book, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The flap 2 is provided with the two slots 4: 5, and the flap 3 is provided with the two slots 6 and 7. The slot 4 is adapted to register with the slot 6 and the slot 5 with the slot 7 when the flaps are folded upon each other.
8 is the end flap, which is provided with the slot 9 and the tongue 10. The slot 9 is adapted to register with the slots 4 and 6 when the end flaps are folded together.
As shown, the other end of the cover is formed by three flaps 11, 12, and 13, which are folded in the usual way and pasted together. One cover of the book is inserted in this closed end. The other end of my improved book-cover is then closed in the following manner: The side fiap 3 is first folded over, as shown in Fig. 2. Then the other side flap 2 is folded down on top of the flap 3, the slot 4 coming just on top of and registering with the slot 6 and the slot 5 coming just on top of and registering with the slot 7. Then the end flap 8 is folded over, so that the slot 9 comes just on top of and registering with the slots 4 and 6. The tongue 10 is passed through the slots 5 and 7 in the flaps 2 and 3. It is then bent or folded back upon itself, as shown in Fig. 2, and passed through the slots 9, 4,
and 6 in all three flaps. In this way the flaps are properly folded and locked in place.
When the cover is to be removed from the book, the tongue is withdrawn from the slots and the flaps are opened out, whereby the cover can be easily disengaged.
My improved cover can be easily and cheaply made and readily applied to a book or removed therefrom. When once applied, it is held firmly in place and will not become loose from handling. It is convenient in use and neat in appearance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a book-cover, the combination of side flaps and an end fiap, two of the flaps being provided with slots adapted to register with each other, and the other flap being provided with a tongue adapted to pass through said slots, substantially as set forth.
2. In a book-cover, the combination of side flaps and an end flap, two of the flaps being provided with slots adapted to register with each other, and the other flap being provided with a slot and with a tongue adapted to pass through the slots in the other flaps and then to pass through the slot in the flap having the tongue, substantially as set forth.
3. Ina cover, the combination of side flaps and an end flap, two of the flaps being provided with two slots each adapted to register with one another, and the other flap being provided with a slot adapted to register with provided with a slot adapted to register with the outer slots of the side flaps, a tongue on the end flap adapted to be passed through the inner slots in the side flaps, and to be bent back and passed through the slot in the end flap and the outer slots in the side flaps, substantially as set forth.
5. A book-cover having an end adapted to be opened out consisting of the flap 2, provided with the slots 4 and 5, the flap 3 provided with the slots 6 and 7 adapted to register with the slots 4 and 5, the flap 8 provided with the slot 9 adapted to register with the slots 4 and 6 and provided with the tongue 10, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM ,B. HADLEY.
