Beit known that I, SAMUEL M. VAUOLAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Phila delphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in vertical tubular boilers of the type adapted to be used on street railway or dummy cars.
The objects ofmy invention are to simplify the construction of this type of boiler and to provide a magazine-feed, so that the boiler can be fed from the top of the car without interfering with the smoke flue or stack.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a vertical sectional view of my improved boiler, showing the framework of a car in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 2 2, Fig. l, showing the car-frame in- `dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line 3 3, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View of a detail.
A is the shell of aboiler, preferably secured to rings d a at each end, and also secured to the upper ring a is the head or upper tubesheet A. Secured to the lower ring a is the fire-box casing A2, which in turn is secured to the lower tube-sheet A3. The lire-box casing is secured at intervals to the shell of the boiler by suitable stays a2. The rings may in some instances be dispensed with and the shell secured direct to the upper tubeisheet A and casing A2.
Extending from the lower tube-sheet to a point above the upper tube-sheet is a cylinder B. This cylinder is open at top and bottom and is a magazine for the coal to be fed to the fire-box C when' the grate D is agitated. The grate (shown by dotted lines) forms the subject of a separate application for patent, filed February 9, 1898, Serial No. 669,684.
The tubes e extend from one tube-sheet to the other and are open at the top and bottom to allow for the passage of the products of combustion.
Depending from the lower tube-sheet A3 are a series of water-legs E, which surround the opening from the magazine B and form a continuation of the magazine. These tubes are set, preferably, at an angle, as shown, and are for the purpose of regulating the discharge of the coal to the fire-surface. They are suitably spaced and each tube has an inner tubular section e', Fig. 4, so that the circulation in the tubes is insured.
.The upper portion F of the boiler is preferably tapered, so as to direct the products of combustion to the stack or iiue F', centrally situated in respect to the boiler.
The upper portion or continuation of the magazine B is forked, forming two inclined feed-spouts B', which open into a hopper B2, surrounding the stack F. This hopper has a suitable cover b, which can be removed when it is necessary to charge the hopper and its magazine with coal. Encircling the hopper is a cover-plate b', which closes the opening in the roof of the car.
The upper portion F is made detachable from the tube-section of the boiler and may be drawn out of the opening in the roof of the car, so that access can be had to the tubes for the purpose of cleaning or for repairs.
G is a nozzle for the exhaust-steam and is connected to the engine through the pipe g. This nozzle is mounted on the forks B' of the magazine and has ian ges g', which are bolted thereto.
The fire-box has a suitable opening c, so that the engine-driver or Stoker canv examine the fire, and in case of necessity this opening can be used for the purpose of charging the firebox with fuel.
In the present instance I mount the boileron suitable beams, forming part of the framework of a car, and so mount it that the greater portion ofthe fire-box is below the floor-level. Thus I am enabled to get a greater tube-sun face than heretofore without increasing the diameter of the boiler.
I claim as my invention-'- 1. The combination in a vertical boiler, of a shell, upper and lower tube-sheets, a combustion-chamber at the lower end of the boiler and a central stack at the upper end thereof, hre-tubes extending from lone tube-sheet to the other, a central vertical drum forming a magazine opening into the combustion-chamber and forked at the upper end, a hopper surrounding the stack with which the forked upper end of the magazine communicates, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a vertical tubular steam-boiler, having a fire-chamber at its base, of the shell, the tube-plates and tubes, the central drum forming the magazine, the central smoke-stack communicating with the tubes, and a hopper surrounding the stack, the magazine communicating with the said hopper and with the lire-chamber, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a vertical stea1nboiler, of the shell, fire-box casing, upper and lower tube-sheets, tubes extending from one tube-sheet to the other, a central magazine also extending from one tube-sheet to the other, a series of water-legs depending from the lower tube-sheet into the fire-box and surrounding the mouth of the magazine, said legs being arranged on an angle so that the space between the lower ends of the tubes will be less than that of the upper end, with circulating tubular sections within each leg, substantially as described.
4f. The combination in a Vertical tubular steam-boiler, of the shell, the tube-sheets, tubes, a central drum forming the magazine and attached to the tube-sheets, and a removable upper section containing the upper end of the magazine, the smoke-stack and flue and carrying the hopper which communicates with the magazine, substantially as described.
The combination in a vertical tubular steam-boiler, of the shell, tube-plates and tubes, a central magazine and a central stack, said magazine being forked at its upper end, with an exhaust-nozzle directlyT under the stack and mounted on the fork of the magazine, substantially as described.
