To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. GAIRINo, of J ohnstown, in the county of Cambria and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Trolley Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of electric trolley devices in which a grooved Wheel or other contact device is carried by a pole secured on a car in such a Way as to have universal movement, springs being provided to press the contact device against the conductor.
The object of myinvention is to provide a trolley device which has a minimum number of parts and which may be simply and cheaply constructed, but which is durable in construction and effective in operation.
My invention consists, broadly, of a single torsion-spring secured at each end in a transverse position on the car, a trolley-arm being secured about the central portion of said spring, so that both the lateral and vertical movements will be provided by the flexibility of the upward-pressure spring.
My invention further consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts shown and described.
The annexed drawing is a perspective view of a trolley device embodying the features of my invention.

E is a socket, in which the trolley-arm proper E, carrying the contact device G, is

The support M isa single casting comprising a base having two columns. The support is suitably fastened on the car. Vertical shanks g, which are formed at either end of the spring 0 by the continuation of the coil, enter into recesses or sockets in the columns of support M. The spring 0, after being placed on the support M, is rigidly secured by the clamps F F, bolted to the columns.

1. The combination of a single transverse torsionspring secured at each end on the vehicle and a contact-carrying arm having its lower end secured about the central portion of the said spring.
2. In an electric trolley device, the combi nation of a support having columns, recesses or sockets in said columns, and a torsionspring formed withvertical shanks at its extremities and means for retaining said shanks in said sockets. i
3. The combination, inan electric trolley device, of a support having columns, a torsion-spring, means for securing the torsionspring to said columns, a socket formed of two pieces of partly-curved metal clamped together about said spring, and a contactcarrying trolley-arm carried by the socket.
4. The combination of the base or support having columns at each end, a socket in each column, a transverse torsion-spring having vertical shanks entering said sockets, a pair of semicircular clamps engaging the ends of said spring and secured to the said columns,
and a pair of semicircular members clamped about the central portion of saidspring and forming a socket for the trolley=arm.
