DAVID RODOLPI-I GOTNER, OF BARDWELL, KENTUCKY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 61 1,446, dated September 27, 1898. Application filed June 1,1897. Serial No. 638,841. (No model.)
NER, of Bardwell, in the county of Oarlisle and State of Kentucky, have invented cer-V tain new and useful Improvements in a Oombined Reading, Writing, and Music Stand; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to improvements in combined reading, writing, and music stands; and the object of the same is to provide an improved construction of stand which may be adapted to conveniently hold books for reading or may be quickly and readily converted into a music-stand or writing-table.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter more par ticularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the table. Fig. 2 isa side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section on line :0 0c of Fig. 2. I
Referring to the numerals of thedrawings, 1 indicates the supporting-legs, and 2 the vertical standard to the lower end of which they are secured, the upper end of said standard being slotted longitudinally, as illustrated at 3. Intermediately pivoted in the slotted standard is the supporting-arm 4, having the short uprights 5 at its opposite ends. Pivoted at one end to the front end of the arm 4 is the adj usting-arm 6, which is slottedlongitudinally, as indicated at 7, through which slot the set-screw 8 is adapted to extend, said screw engaging one of the legs of the table, so that the adj usting-arm 6 is secured at the desired elevation to obtain the proper inclination of the frame which supports the table-leaf. This leaf is formed of the narrow central section 9 and the side sections 10, which are hinged to the central section by hinges 11, the meeting edges of these sections being beveled, as indicated, so that their movement may be permitted. The central section is pivoted between the uprights 5, carried by the arm 4, and at its front edge is provided with the plate 12, depending therefrom, which plate is formed With the curved slot 13, through which extends the lockingscrew 14, which is carried by the front upright and by means of which the sections are locked together and a rigid leaf or top pro= vided.
Secured to arm 4 are the transversely-extending arms 15, to which the curved levers 16 are intermediately pivoted. One end of each of these levers is pivoted to the under side of one of the sections 10 near its outer edge, while the opposite end of each of said levers is pivoted to the under side of the opposite section near its inner edge by links 17. The object of this construction is that when a book is placed upon the table the sections will adjust themselves as the leaves are turned from one side of the book to the other, so that a very convenient reading-stand is provided,
as the book will always rest flatly thereon, the
table adjusting itself as the leaves of the book are turned. When not desired for use as a reading-table, the locking-screwis adjusted to render the sections rigid, and a convenient table or stand is provided forwriting.
When the table is to be used as a musicstand, the top is lowered to the desired position and the hooks 18, carried by the lower edge of the same, turned in position to hold the music.
From the above description it will be seen thatI have produced a table or stand in which the leaf or top is adjustable to vary the inclination of the same and in which the leaf adj usts itself as the book is being read, so that the book always remains in convenient position for reading, the construction and adj ustment being extremely simple.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. The combination of a vertical standard provided with supporting-legs, a supportingarm pivoted to the legs and provided with uprights at its ends, a leaf consisting of a central section pivoted to the uprights at the ends of the supporting arm, side sections hinged to the central section, levers pivoted to the supporting-arm, one end of each lever being pivoted to the inner edge of one side section, and to the outer edge of the other side section, and means, substantially as described, for locking said sections together to prevent movement of the same, as set forth.
2. In a table the combination of a standard, an arm intermediately pivoted thereto, a slotted adjusting'arm pivoted at one end to said arm, a locking-screw engaging the slotted arm for holding it in the desired position, a leaf carried by the intermediately-pivoted arm, and hooks carried by said leaf for use when the device is used as a music-stand, substantially as described. 7
3. The combination of supporting-legs, a slotted standard supported thereby, an arm intermediately pivoted in said slotted standard, uprights carried by the ends of said arm, transversely-extending arms secured to said arm, levers intermediately pivoted to said transversely-extendingarms, a leaf comprising sections, the central section being pivoted between the uprights, the side sections pivoted to the central section, one end of one lever being pivoted to one section near its outer edge, and the corresponding end of the other lever being pivoted to the other section, and means for varying the inclination of said leaf, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a standard, an arm carried thereby, a sectional leaf, the central section thereof being pivoted to the supporting-arm, and the side sections hinged to the central section, a plate secured to one end of the central section and having a curved slot therein, and a locking-screw carried by the arm and engaging said slot to hold the sections of the table rigid, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 7
DAVID RODOLPH GOTNER.
