Letters Patent No. 61,124, dated January 8 1867.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR WASHING ORES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RICHARD UREN, of. Houghton, in the county of Houghton, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Copper Ore Washer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in washing ores or minerals by causing them to flow across a revolving helt,.by which means the ores of minerals may be thoroughly washed and the earth be entirely removed there from. It more particularly consists in constructing a frame in which run pulleys, and a wide belt, upon which the ore is deposited from a deflecting board, and upon which aflow 'of water is also admitted to the bel-t from a deflecting board. Various devices have been introduced for the purpose of washing ores, but have proved unsatisfactory and of but little account, failing, in a great measure, of performing the work for which they were designed. But by my invention I am enabled to obviate all of the difficulties encountered by other devices used for this purpose. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved ore-washingmachine.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same from the line m x.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A is the frame of my improved apparatus for washing ores, made of wood, and of any desired dimensions suitable for the amount of work desired to be done. 13 is a wide belt reaching from one side of the frame A to the other, entirely filling the space between the posts-of the frame. This belt 13 runs over pulleys or drums, C C, which are provided with journals that run in proper bearings secured to the frame A. L is a deflecting board extending longitudinally from end to end of the frame A, and secured thereto by any proper means. F is also another deflecting board, and extending the whole length of the frame, and upon which one edge of the belt B runs. G is a box or spout locatedat the side of the frame A, and immediately under the edge of the deflecting board F. I I are tubes or pipes, one of which extends through thebox S into the box S, while the other only extends into the box S. J is a pulley secured to the shaft 0, to'which poweris applied to' drive the machine.
i The operation is simple and perfect. Power being applied to the pulley J, the machine or belt Bis driven in the direction of the arrow, and the ore is placed upon the deflector E, ;and is spread out upon the belt B, while a stream of water is made to flow down the deflector D, upon the belt B. Now it will be seen that the belt 13 descends from the deflectors E and D toward the deflecting board F and box Gr, so that a great portion of the water and heavier ores run off into the box G, while the balance is carried by the belt B, and deposited in the boxes S and S, in which is kept a supply of water from the belt, and which passes oifthrough the eduction tubes or pipes I I. H H H H are feet upon which the machine stands.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 7 Washing ores or minerals by causing the same to flow across a revolving belt, substantially and for the purposes described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this day of 1866- RICHARD UREN.
