- To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known thatLWILLlAM Cswrnmlithographic printer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and -a resident of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new anduseful linprovementsin and Connected with Mechanism for Pasting the Bottoms of Paper-Bags, (patented in Great Britain, No. 11,784, May 12, 1897,) of which the following is a specification; v
This invention relates to asimple device for pasting down the folded parts" at the bottoms of paper bags.
In carrying 'out the invention I construct a 'table of any suitable material and fit th'e'reon an oblong or other desired form' of paste vessel'haying amovable front gate. Working g liQ9 I BgthQhQItonLnf this-vessel is a tongueor biade,'which-when necessary can be shot forwardouti'n front-of the paste vessel and then drawn. back again within it by means of lever mechanism connected to a cross-shaft underneath the table, which latter is acted upon jby treadle orother mechanism and-b' a spring orsuchlike. Thearrangemen is such that when it is desired to paste dowm the triangular-shaped folded-over parts at the bottom of the bag the tongue,-
Y with paste on its upper side, is shot forward under the'action of the treadle orthe like over the bottom part of the bag, and the triangular parts can then be. easily folded over on top of the tong-ue,'so as to take the paste therefrom, whereupon the tongue -is with-I drawn by relieving, the treadle-and the triangular parts merely pressed tightly down on the bottom of the-bag bythe fingers. By raising or lowering'the gate ofthe paste ves- -sel the amount or thickness of paste on the tonguecan be regulated.
Asit is necessary in the case of glazed or thick paper bags to keep them pressed for some time in order to make the paste adhere firmly, I provide at the front or other part of the table a pressing-board, consisting of a strip of wood or metal, which is held tightly against the'under side of the table by means 'of rubber or other springs or equivalent. This board has a guidewayin it.
The table is also recessed or cut out to enable the newlypitsted bagsto be inserted in the guideway and between the board and the table,; so 'as to be I subjected to pressure.) The newlypasted bagsareplaced in the guide'way one after the other until they gradually -i ill "it,
sorted, tumble over at the end of theid into a receptacle;
when they one by one, as fresh bags are in- In order that. mysaid.invention may be" properly understood-fl have hereunto 'a'p 6o pended threeexplanatory sheets of drawings,
whereon- Figure '1 is an Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig 4 is a part section on the line wag-Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view. Fig. 5 is a plan view, and Fig. 6 an end view, of the paste vessel. Fig.

same reference-letters wherever repeated indicate the same parts, a is the table of the a front gate 0 This gate can be adjusted The paste vessel is made with ver-- tical guides 0 c in which is 'movably fitted to any desired position in the guides, c 0 so as to regulate the outflow of the paste, and
when adjusted can be clamped in position by the screw '0 e is the movable tongue or blade, which,- as
shown, may be of triangular shape; In other words, the upper side of the tongue inclines in two directions, like a roof. This tongue can slide back and forward along the bottom of the. paste vessel. In' Fig. 5 the full lines show the tongue in its back position, while the dotted lines e indicate its 'out or forward position.
The mechanism for actuating t'h'e'tongue e consistspf a double bell-crank leverf, which is fulcrumed at f to a downwardly-projecting arm 9, attached to the under side of the plate d. The upper ends of the doublebellcrank lever f are forked, as shown at f.
.a treadle z.
' which is provided with a guide-plate l at one side. As shown clearly at. Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the guide Z is hinged to the table at Z and the board Z is pressed upward against the bot tom of the table by means of aspiral sprin gm.
This spring at its upper end is fitted in a re- .cess in the bottom of the board Z, and at its lower end it is held -in place by means of a pin n, which is secured within a slot 0 in a bracket 19, attached to the under side of the table. (See Fig. 4.) llhe pin n is clamped in position within the slot 0 by means of the screw-nut q. The detail view Fig. 4 shows the pin and the-methodof its attachment to the bracket 11 clearly. In this view at is a square made on the lower end of the :pin, so as to prevent its movement within the slot 0.
r is a block attached to the'sideof the board l for the purpose of depressing it easily. As
will be seen, the end Z of the boardlisslightl y' curved at its upper side and, as will also be seen, the table is recessed at a, and the sided of the recess is curved and faced with brass or other metal. p
s is a plate fitted on the table a and having an upturned edge 8'. The bag-bottoms after being pasted are pressed and fiattenedon this plate 8. t is areceptacle for the bags to be pasted.
If desired, a pastor with its accessories I can be fitted at each end of the table a.
The arrow to atFig. 3 indicates the direction in which the bags, after being pasted, are inserted in the presser Z, and the arrow it indicates the direction taken by the bags as they tumble over the inclined end 1 of the presser-board.
