UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DUKES THOMPSON AND WAL ENGLAND,ASSIGNORS TO WILLI PLACE.
M WELLINGTON GREENER, OF SAME SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0.
610,569, dated September 13, 1898.
Application filed January 28, 1898- Serlal No. 668,338. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH DUKES THOMP SON, a resident of 36 Upper Highgate street, and WALTER THOMPSON, a resident. of 86 L6- zells street, in the city of Birmingham, England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented new and useful Improvements in Double-Barrel Guns, (for which we have made application for patent in Great Britain, N 0. 15,544, bearing date June 30, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in double-barrel guns operated by one trigger; and our object is primarily to provide improved means whereby at choice either of the two barrels may be fired by the direct vertical action of the trigger upon the sear-levers or their substitutional equivalents, also to provide means whereby unintentional double firing is prevented. .We attain these objects by themechanism illustrated upon the'accomtrigger.
panying drawings, in which Figurel is a side view showing this our in vn tion when at rest. .Fig. 2 shows the mechanism as when the rightbarrel is fired. Fig. 3 shows the changed position of mechanism as ready for firing the left barrel. Figs. 4 and 5 show detail side and plan views of the Figs. 6 and 7 show detail end and side views of the trigger-pull. Fig. 8 is a plan view showing the relative position of the two sear-levers. Figs. 9 and 10 are detached side and plan views showing the cam-stop device for preventing unintentional firing. Fig. 11 is a view further explanatory of the cams stop device.
We have only shown those parts of a gun which are necessary to explain this our invention, and similar numbers refer to similar; parts throughout the several views.
14 is the action-body, to which are secured in the ordinary manner the butt and also the barrels and upon which are carried the va rious firing mechanism.
15 is thetrigger-plate, to which the triggerblade 16 is pivoted, as usual, at '17. The rear part of this trigger-blade is gapped to receive the trigger-pull 1 8,which is pivoted-at 19. The
upper rear part of this pull is formed into an 5 arm 20, whose point 21 may be brought at will into position beneath either of the sear-levers 22 23. In a state of rest the said arm is held "beneath the lever 22 by means of the spring 24; but by a pulling pressure upon the pull 18 below the pivot 19, asindicated, for instance, by arrow 25, the point 21 is moved forward to the position beneath the lever 23.
22 is the sear-lever for firing the right-hand- TER THOMPSON, OF BIRMINGHAM,
barrel, and 23 is the sear-lever for'firing the left-hand barrel. I
Now it will be seen that if the trigger be pulled in the direction of the arrow 26 the le-' ver 22 is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and the right-hand barrel is fired; but if instead of this the trigger is pulled in the direction of arrow 25 the point 21 is first thrown forward beneath the lever 23, and then the latter is raised, and thereby the left-hand barrel is fired, so that a choice may be readily made of which barrel shall be fired. Again, upon the upper side of thetrigger-plate 15 is provided the cam-like piece 27, which acts in concert with the cam-like piece 28 upon the side of the arm 20 in such a manner that upon the upward movement of the trigger the point 21 shall be compelled to take a position beneath one or the other of the levers 22 or 23. (See- Fig. 11..
Whatwe claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1.- The combination in a lock of a gun having double barrels, of the triggenpull 18, pivoted upon the depending pivoted trigger-blade 16,-such trigger-pull having the arm 20, and point 21, to selectively raise either of the sears of the lock, substantially as set forth and shown.
2. The combination of themovable cam piece 28, upon the pivoted trigger-pull arm 20, with the fixed cam-piece 27, as set forth and shown and for the purposes specified.
-In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
