M EAT-HANG ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,414, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed $eptemher 24, 1897. Serial No. 652 ,8'78. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LIZZIE COUCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forreston, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Meat-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in meat-hangers.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted for suspending meat from a pole or other support and capable of being readily placed on a pole from any point between its ends and without stringing it on the same from one end.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a meat-hanger constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the 'cross-piece. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the hook.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 designates an inverted- U shaped loop constructed of stout wire or other suitable material and adapted to straddle a pole or other suitable support, whereby it is connected with the same. The terminals of the loop or yoke 1 are coiled to form circular eyes 2 for the reception of the ends of a cross-piece 3 but the eyes may be otherwise constructed, if desired.
The cross-pieoe 3, which forms the bottom of the loop, passes through the eyes 2, and its ends 4.- are curved, as shown, to form arms for engaging the sides of the loop or yoke and prevent them from spreading under the weight to which the hanger is subjected. The arms are shown curved in the accompanying drawin gs, but they may be otherwise bent, and they are adapted to be readily disengaged from the loop or yoke to enable the latter to be placed on a pole at a point between the endsthereof without stringing it on the same from one end. At the center the cross-piece 3 is provided with a depending U-shaped bend or depression 5, adapted to be engaged by an eye 6 of a hook 7. The end of the hook 7 is pointed to enable it to enter a piece of meat readily, and the hook, which has the eye 6 arranged at the upper end of the shank, may be readily introduced on and removed from the crosspiece. The bend in thecross-piece prevents the hook from slipping laterally on the hanger and retains the weight at the center thereof.
The invention has the following advantages: The hangeris simple, inexpensive, and durable, and possesses great strength. The sides of the loop are prevented from spreading under the weight of a piece of meat, and the hanger may be readily hung on a pole or other support. The weight is retained at the center of the hanger and the hook is prevented from slipping laterally on the cross-piece.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- A device of the class described, comprising a substantially U -shaped loop constructed of a single piece of metal and provided at the lower ends of its sides with integral eyes and adapted to be arranged on a pole or support, the removable cross-piece detachably engaging the eyes of the loop, and a hook suspended from the cross-piece and detachablyconnected with the same, said hook being held against movement longitudinally of the cross-piece, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing .as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LIZZIE COUCH.
. Witnesses:
ED. COUCH, EUGENE COUCH.
