Be it known that I, OSSIAN ALBERT RING- BOM, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and
a resident of Lahtis, in the Arch-Duchy of in Norway, No. 5,085, dated November 7, 1895;
in Belgium, No.120,436, dated March 20, 1896; in France, No. 254,966, dated March 21, 1896, and in England, No. 2,867, dated February 9, 1897,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in slide-valves for steam engines with differential pistons.
The object is to provide a simple and cheap as well as efficient and reliable slide-valve; and the invention consists in the special constructions specifically described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing shows a longitudinal vertical section of a cylinder for a steam-engine provided with said improvements.
The engine-cylinder consists of a narrower part and a wider part, preferably cast to-' gether in one piece, in which moves a differential piston,whose end surfaces are designated 0 and ('3', so that a smaller steam-chamber a is constituted in the narrower part and a larger steam-chamber b is constituted in the wider part. type and moves in a central bore in the differential piston. The said bore in the piston is somewhat wider at the end next to the larger piston-bottom c and the slide-valve is formed so that it fills up the narrower part of the said bore and a small part of the wider part of the bore, the thicker part of the slidevalve being shorter'than the wider part of the bore, so that an empty space is formed between the slide valve and the piston,which space always communicates, by means of openings h in the piston, with the steam-exhaust 'i or a condenser. The slide-valve d is in its turn provided with a central bore from ablyconsisting of a spiral spring.
The slide-valve d is of the round the end next to the larger piston-bottom 0 near to the other end of the slide-Valve,which is thus closed by a bottom, through which runs a rod is, passing into the said bore of the slide-valve, where its end is surrounded by a spiral spring Z or buffer in such a mannor that one end of the spring is turned toward the said bottom and the other end against a washer or the like fastened to the end of the rod; The other end of the rod 70 is screwed through the smaller cylinder-head and outs'ide'the same provided with a nut by means of which the rod can be adjusted so'as to extend more or less into the bore in the slidevalve. In a recess of the inside of the said cylinder-head is placed a buffer m, prefer- Thebore in the slide-valve constantly communicates, by means of side openings t,with the smaller steam-chambera and the steam-port p,while the end of the slide-valve facing the pistonrod is provided with a socket to. When the slide-valve has the position shown in the drawingthat is to say, when the slide-valve has reached its extreme position to the left in relation to the piston-the mouth of the bore in the slide-valve is tightly closed by a tap o, projecting from and fastened to the head of the piston-rod, so that the larger steam-chamber is shut off from communication with the smaller. The larger steam chamber then communicates, by means of openings 6 e in the head f of the piston-rod-,with the annular space formed in the wider part of the bore in the piston between the slide-valve and the piston and by means of the openings h in the piston with the steam-exhaust 2'. Again,when the slide-valve has been moved to its other extreme position in relation to the piston the socket it closes tightly to the inner bore of 4 0 the interior of the slide-valve. Respectively the steam-ports r r are openings for oiling and s s outlets for the water of condensation.
The working is the following: The steam entering through the steam-port p acts constantly with full pressure upon the smaller bottom 0 of the differential piston, and also constantly fills (through. the openings 75) the.
bore in the slide-valve. In the drawing the slide-valve is shown in the position which it takes up wh en the piston moves from the right to the left. The larger steam-chamber is then shut off from the smaller steam-chamber and the steam-port by means of the tap '0, projecting into and closing the mouth of the bore of the slide-valve, while the larger steamchamber communicates with the steam-exhaustz' through the annular space around the slide-valve and the openings h. During this movement of the piston the slide-valve is firmly kept in the same position by the pressure of the steam upon the bottom of the slide-valve and the enlarged part ofthe same which bounds the small annular space 00. When the piston has reached near the bottom of the larger steam-chamber, the bottom of the slide-valve strikes the buffer 1 of the rod 70 and the slide-valve is drawn into its other extreme position, while the piston moves on, whereby the socket u closes the communication between the larger steam-chamber and the exhaust z and the tap 1) leaves the mouth of the bore of the slide-valve, so that the steam-chambers enter into communication with each other, and the piston stops and begins to move in the opposite direction. The piston now moves back until the bottom of the slide-valve strikes the buffer m and is stopped thereby, while the piston moves on, so that the slide-valve again takes up the position shown in the drawing.
What I claim is A slide valve for differential piston of steam-engine moving in a longitudinal bore in the piston and itself provided with a 1011- gitudinal bore extending from the end of the slide-valve facing the piston-rod nearly to the other end of the same, side openings in the slide-valve so located that the bore in the same constantly communicates with the smaller steam-chamber and the steam-inlet, anannular space in the bore in the piston near the end of the slide-valve facing the piston-rod said space being always in communication with the exhaust, a socket at the end of the slide-valve facing the piston-rod adapted to shut off the communication between the larger steam-chamber and said annular space when the slide-valve stands in its extreme position in relation to the piston nearest the smaller steam-chamber, a tap adapted to close the mouth of the said bore in the slide-Valve a rod extending into the bore of the slide-valve and adapted to move the slidevalve to the first-mentioned position in relati on to the piston, the slide-valve being adapted to be pushed to the other extreme position by the cylinder-head or a buffer in the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
