COMBINATION-TOOL.

The object of the present invention is to in] prove the construction of combination-tools} and to provide a wrench adapted to be converted into a brace and capable of being mounted upon a bench and of serving as a vise.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination-tool constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the parts being arranged to form a brace. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, the parts being arranged to form a vise. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, the parts being arranged as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shank.

'1 designates a shank receiving a sliding jaw 2, which is adjusted to and from a stationary jaw 3 by means of an adjusting-screw 4:. The sliding jaw is provided with a rectangular opening for thevshank 1, and the fixed jaw, which is detachably secured to the outer end of the shank, is provided with a corresponding opening and is adapted to be removed to permit the parts to be separated and assembled, as the inner end is enlarged for a purpose hereinafter described and will not permit the sliding jaw to be introduced on the wrench from that end. Any suitable means may be employed for detachably fastening the stationary jaw'3 to the outer end of the shank 1.
The rear end of the stationary jaw is provided with a claw 5 for extracting nails, and the engaging faces 6 and 7 of the jaws are provided with longitudinal grooves, angular in gages athreaded opening of the same.

The inner portion of the screw 4. is smooth and passes'through a corresponding perforation of the loop or collar 8, and the upper or outer portion, which is connected with thefmovable jaw, is threaded and en- The screw is provided with a suitable stop or collar which engages the loop 8 to form a stop and prevent the screw from moving longitudinally, the loop being arranged between the milled head and the stop of the screw. The loop 8 is arranged upon an enlarged portion 9 of. the inner end of the shank, and the latter is provided at the outer edge of the e11- larged portion 9 with a laterally-offset rectangular car 10, which forms aninner shoulder against which the loop or collar abuts.
The loop or collar 8 is provided at its back with a rearwardly-extending lug or projecfl tion 11, adapted to fit in an opening of a bench to support the device when the same is arranged to form a vise, as hereinafter described. The lateral offsetting of the perforated ear 10 also provides a shoulder 12 at the outer edge of the enlarged portion 9, and a crank-handle 13, which is detachably connected with the perforated car by a suitable fastening device 14,is adapted to abut against the shoulder 12, whereby it is rigidly secured to the shank by the single fastening device 14.
The crank-handle 13 is composed of inner and outer arms 15 and 16,.detachably connected by a fastening device 17 and adapted to be separated, so that the inner arm 15 may form an extension of the shank when it is desired to use the device as a simple wrench. The inner end of the arm 15 is recessed to receive the perforated ear and is adapted to abut against the outer edge of the same as Well as against the shoulder 12. The inner arm is provided with a rotary grip 18, arranged on v the rounded portion of the arm, and the other ranged as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accom-' panying drawings, may operate similar to an ordinary brace.
When it is desired to use the device as a vise, the crank-handle is entirely removed from the shank and the rest of the device is arranged as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, the lug or projection 11 being fitted in a suitable opening or socket of a bench. V
The invention has the .following advantages: The combination-tool is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and is adapted to be readily arranged to form a wrench, a brace, or a vise. It is adapted for extracting nails and it is capable of gripping an ordinary bit.
Ohangesin the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shank provided with a shoulder or stop, a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, a collar or loop arranged on the shank and abutting against the shoulder or stop, said collar or loop being provided with a lug adapted to fit in an opening or socket of a bench, and means for adjusting the movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shank provided at its inner end with an enlarged portion and having a perforated car 10 laterally offset to form a shoulder 12, a stationary jaw detachably secured to the outer end of the shank, an adjustable jaw, means for operating the latter,
a crank-handle provided at its inner arm with a perforation, said inner arm being adapted to be arranged longitudinally of the shank and at right angles to the same and to fit against the said shoulder 12 in both positions, and a fastening device passing through the perforations and detachably securing the crank-handle to the shank, substantially as described."
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shank having one end enlarged and provided beyond the enlarged portion with a laterally-offset ear forming a shoulder, a movable jaw, a detachable stationary jaw, a collar or loop arranged on the enlarged portion of the shank and provided with a lug adapted to fit in an opening or socket of a bench, and means for adjusting the movable jaw, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shank enlarged at one end and provided with a laterally-offset ear formin g a straightinner shoulder, a loop arranged on the enlarged portion of the shank, fitting against the said shoulder and provided with a lug, a sliding jaw, a stationary jaw, and a crank-handle detachably and adj ustably connected to the ear of the shank and fitting against the outer edge of the said enlargement, substantially as described.
