SAFE FOR PASSENGER- CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,336, dated June 28, 1898.
Application filed March 30,1397.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC FREED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes for Passenger- Oars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in safes, and more particularly to that class of safes intended for the temporary safe deposit of the'valuables usually carried by a traveler; and the object is to provide such a receptacle as will fulfil the wants of the public in this respect. 7
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, adaptation, and arrangement of the parts of the safe, as will be ularly pointed out in the claim. t
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

tice I prefer to secure the inner ends of these stay-braces from the inside of the safe, and for this purpose I have shown set-screws 7 7, bearing against. the braces and projecting into the safe from the top 2 and bottom 3, although any other suitable means may be employed to secure the ends of said braces from within the safe.
' 8 represents the hinged door, and it is provided with a suitable lock and key, in addition to which I provide a rotary switch 9', 0p erated by a removable key 9, the switch forming part of the alarm-circuit, the wires 10 10 of which areconcealed in the structure to prevent the possibility of their being tampered with, and a signal is placed in the conductors or porters station, and in addition to this an indicatolgwhich is copnected to the common circuit and indicates the attempt to tamper with a particular safe in the car.
The interior of the safe is fitted up into suitable apartments for the reception of such articles of jewelry and other valuables usually carried by a traveler, and as the safe itself, being made of steel, is non-combustible, as well as burglar-proof, nothing short of abso lute destruction of the safe itself will harm the contents.
14 represents an automatic switch forming part of thealarm-circuit in connection with the conductor-Wires 10 10. This switch 14 is located within the safe, and it comprises the spring-actuatedrod 1 6,the projecting end 15 of which extends into the path of the door 8.
The opposite end of this rod 16 terminates in a contact-finger 17, which normally rests between the twocontact- points 18 and 19, and
therefore the slightest movement of the door outward or inward will cause the finger 17 to close the alarm-circuit through one or the other of said contact-points and sound the alarm. Consequently an attempt to force the door inward will be frustrated, as well as an attempt to open it.
Of course it. will be understood that the rightful owner of the key 9 may'cut out the switch so controlled, and thereby open the or dinary lock to have access to the safe at all times without sounding the alarm.
Of. course it will be understood that the bifurcated contact-point 18 19 forms one terminal of the alarm-circuit and the spring contact-finger 17, which normally rests between but without touching either, forms the other terminal, so that if the door be forced inward the finger 17 will close the alarm circuit through the point 18, while if the attempt be made to force the door outward the same alarm-circuit will be closed by said finger 17 coming in contact with the point 19, and as the key 9 simply opens or closes the conductors 10 10, forming a part of the alarm-circuit above mentioned, it follows that when said circuit is closed by said key 9 the safe is protected, and of course when the circuit is broken or interrupted by the same means the door may be opened without the points 17 and 19 operating to sound the alarm.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the sa1ne,as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A safe of the class described, provided with retaining-recesses, in combination with a series of stay-braces and means, substantially as described, for securing the ends of said braces within said safe, as and for the purpose set forth.
