To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS I-L-SIMPsoN and PHILIP T. HANDIGES, citizens -of the brake-beam for railway-cars; and it consists of the device, its construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. t is a detail view in perspective, illustrating a modification of the invention. Fig. 5 is a view in section on the line 5 5, Fig. 2. Fig.

WVe carry out our invention as follows:
A represents the body of the'beam, preferably made of I-shaped metal. B is a brakehead engaged thereupon, the head being formed, preferably, with an open T-shaped slot or recess (indicated atb) to slip over the end of the I-beam A, said head being secured to the I-beam or body in any suitable manner, as by a bolt 1). We prefer to construct this brake-head with strengthening ribs or braces 19 79 said ribs or braces located at or near the marginal edge of the head,as shown, thereby giving greater firmness and strengthto the brake-head.

By coring out the fulcrum-jaws and forming them in this manner we get a larger surface, and consequently greater strength to resist the strain.
D represents the guide-pins, and D a clip by which each of the guide-pins may be se- In order to provide a simple fastening for the guide-pins, the inner end of each pin is preferably formed with a groove or recess (indicated at d) to engage the outer adjacent edge of the body of the beam, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 5, the clip holding the pin against the adjacent edge of the body of the beam. The clip may be secured to the body of the beam in any suitable manner, asby an I-bolt D passed therethrough. By recessing or grooving the pin, as indicatedat cl, to set over the adjacent edge of the body of the beam the pin is held by a simple form of clip firmly in position.
While we have shown and described. an I- shaped brake-beam body, we do not limit ourselves solely to this form of construction, although such form is preferred.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the brake-head is constructed with an orifice O, in which a hook may be engaged in a customary manner. In said figures the orifice extends trans versely through the end of the brake-head; but in Fig. 9 the marginal ribs which extend from the center of the head to the outer ex-= tremities of the head are shown united toward one of the outer extremities of said ribs or braces by a transverse connecting-rib, the
orifice extending longitudinally of the brakehead through said connecting-rib and facilitatin g the engagement of the customary hook therewith at one extremity of the brake-head.
The brake-head is formed With transverse necting the adjacent marginal ribs or braces, said connecting-rib provided With an orifice extending longitudinally of the brake-head, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination With a brake beam body, of a guide-pin, and a clip to engage the pin with the body, the inner end of said pin formed With a slot or recess to engage the marginal edge of said body, substantially as set forth.
