To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, LUDWIGr FRIEDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State' of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass-Workers Tools; -andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of another form of chaser. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line o; of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan of cap.
My invention relates to improvements in glass-working tools, and particularly to a device for completing bottle-necks after the body of the bottle has been blown.
My invention is in the nature of an improvement of the device shown in Letters Patent No. 509,214, granted to me November 2l, 1893, whereby the device is more readily operated, and, furthermore, new functions canl be performed by said improved device.
I will now describe my improvement, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which like letters indicate like parts wherever they occur.
Referring now to said drawings, A is a Chaser having a conical point a and a form-` ing portion a', which may be provided either with a screw-thread, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or with longitudinal or other desirable projections, as shown in Fig. 3. Adjacent to said forming portions said chaser, toward the upper end thereof, is provided with an annular projection or rim a2, the lower face as of which is adapted to finish the top of the bottle. The rear portion of the chaser is tubular and is adapted to receive the spindle B, the lower end of which terminates in the annular rings or projections b and b2, between which are formed raceways for the reception of the ball-bearings c and c'. In the end of said spindle, extending longitudinally of the same, is formed the socket CZ, in which the cap C, the lower end of said cap being screwthreaded to engage the upper threaded ends of the tubular portion ofthe Chaser A, as shown` in the drawings. The upper end of the spindle is screw -threa'ded and passes v through an orifice in the upper end of the spring-handle formers D, being vsecured in said orifice by the small nuts jj. Said springhandled formers D are provided with jaws arranged to force the glass against the forming portion a of the chasenA, whereby the inside portion of the bottleis caused to take the desired impression fromthel forming portion of the chaser,'which' impression may be screw-thread or a series of alternate impres sions and projections, accordingly as said forming portion is made. former are also provided with inwardly-eX- tending groovers Zt Z2, which are adapted for use in forming a groove onV the outer surface of a bottle, as in making a non-,refillable bottle in which the stopper is cemented in place and which must be broken off at such groove in order to empty the bottle, or thejaws may be otherwise shaped to the outside of the bottle-neck, as may be desirable.
At that part of Aeach jawjust below the annular projection a2 is formed a shoulder Z Z, theshoulders being so formed that when the spring-handles are pressed together they will meet and inclose the lower tubular portion of the chaser, which passes between, while the vannular projection will pass into recesses in 'the shoulders.
Just below the shoulders Z Z each end of the spring-handled former is provided with an orifice or hole, through each of which a guide-roda is passed. These guiderods carry guide-ring o, which is provided with an annular recess for the reception of ball-bearings p p.
The operation of my device as thusfar described is as follows, viz:- The bottle is` irst blown, then headed and placed in my device by inserting the coned point c of the inrlhe jaws of said.

By pressing together the spring-handles and at the same time rolling the bottle in a snap the jaws force the glass firmly and Closely against the forming portion a. When the jaws are thus closed, the inside Chaser is free to rotate, the length of the spindle I3 being such that its radial projections 71, h will be pushed up into the tubular portion of the Chaser and out 01": engagement with the recesses in the cap C when the annular projection ce2 is in its recesses in the shoulders ZZ. IVhen the neck has been formed, the spring-handles may be opened, thus releasing the annular projection a2 from the shoulders Z Z, whereupon by holding the device with the Chaser downward the latter will drop, so that the recesses in the cap C and the radial projections h 7L will engage and thus lock the ehaser to the spindle and to the former. In this way the cha-ser may be either unscreWed from the bottleneck, if internal screw-threads have been formed, or pulled from it, if ridges or projections have been made upon it.
On the surface or lower face a3 of the proj eetion a2, heretofore mentioned, suitable letters or marks may be formed, Wherebf,7 when the bottle-neck is brought against said surface its top end will he impressed with such letters or marks, which may be raised or intaglio, as desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In glass-workers tools, the combination with a pair of spring-handles having jaws, of a Chaser, the rear or upper portion of which is tubular, and the forward portion thereof conical in shape; a spindle adapted to project into the tubular portion of said Chaser; a cap slipped over said spindle, and Clutch meehanism arranged on said spindle and in said cap for the purpose of locking said spindle, cap and chaser, substantiallyas herein described.
2. In glass-Workers tools, the Combination with a pair of spring-handles having jaws, of a Chaser provided with a forming portion, and a collar or projection adjacent to said forming portion; a spindle adapted to project into the upward portion of said tubular portion of said Chaser; said spindle carrying ballbearings arranged at both ends of the tubular portion of said Chaser; a Cap adapted to slip over said spindle; means carried by said spindle and said eap to lock said spindle, cap and Chaser, anda guide-ringhaving ballbearings arranged in an interior annular groove or recess therein, substantially as herein described.
