TRIANGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,763, dated June 14, 1898.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. TRUNK, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Triangle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved triangle for the use of draftsmen, mechanics, and other persons and arranged for conveniently drawing or marking an angle of any desired degree.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of the improvement as arranged as a sixty-degree triangle. Fig. 2 is an edge view of one of the sides of the triangle. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the improvement on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the fastening device for locking the protractor in place, and

The improved triangle is provided with the sides A B O, of which the latter is formed with an edge D, pivoted at E to the apex of the sides A and O, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The edge D is formed at its inner face with a tongue D, adapted to engage a correspondingly-shaped recess formed in the side 0 to securely hold the edge D in place on the side 0 while the triangle is used as an ordinary forty-five-degree triangle. From the inside of the edge D also extends a protractor F, passing loosely through apertures C A, formed in the sides 0 and A, respectively, the said protractor being graduated in the usual manner on both faces to read from forty-five degrees to ninety degrees and from forty-five degrees to zero, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 1, to permit of drawing any desired angle from zero to ninety degrees. (See Figs. 5 and 6.)
In order to lock the edge D with the protractor F in place when adjusted to the desired degree, I provide 'a'fastening device (shown in detail in Fig. 4) consisting prin- Serial No. 649,734. (No model.)
cipally of a thumb-screw G, which presses against a rod G, resting on the free end of a spring G pressing against the edge of the protractor F to lock the latter and the edge D in place. The outward movement of the protractor is limited by a lug F on the protractor engaging a stationary pin H, set in the side 0. a
When it is desired to draw an angle between forty-five and ninety degrees, then the side A is used as the base, as indicated in Fig. 5, the edge D being swung outward until the protractor F is read along the edge of the side 0 to the desired degree, and then the said protractoris fastened or clamped in place by screwing up the thumb-screw to hold the edge D in the properposition. When an angle less than forty-five degrees is to be drawn, then the side B is used as the base, as indicated in Fig. 6, and the edge D is swung outward until it stands at the desired degree.
The device is very simple and durable in construction and can be readily used as an ordinary triaingle or adjusted to draw an angle of any desired degree.
This triangle may be constructed of aluminium, steel, wood, or any material of which the triangles commonly in use are constructed, and also may be made of any size desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A triangle formed with an opening eX- tending through its hypotenusal side from the outer to the inner edge of the same and into an adjacent side, an edge or section hinged to said triangle at one of the acute angles of the same, a pin in the opening of the hypotenusal side, a protractor carried by said hinged edge or section and fitted to slide in said openings, said protractor being formed at its free end with a lug which engages with said pin to limit its outward movement, a spring in the opening of the hypotenusal side and bearing against an edge of said protractor, and a thumb-screw in said latter side and by which the spring is brought to press end to end thereof and an opening extending through said recessed side and into an adjacent side, a section or edge hinged to said triangle and formed with atongue by which it fits into the said recess, a pin in the opening of the recessed side, a protractor carried by said hinged edge or section and fitted to slide in the said openings, said protractor being formed at its free end with alug adapted to engage said pin to limit its outward movement, a spring in the opening of the recessed side and bearing against the edge of said protraetor, and a thumb-screw in said latter side and by which the spring is brought to press upon said protractor to hold the same in adjusted position, as and for the purpose described.
