UNITED STATES Y PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS MlioKE, or oATsPRrNe, TEXAS.
CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 0. 605,733,1dated June 14, 1898. Application filed September 3,1897- Serial No.650,522. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, LOUIS MAoKE, of Catspring, in the county of Austin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in revolving cutters for vegetables, fruits, and the like, and has for its objects simplicity, durability, and cheapness in construction, composed of a minimum number of parts, and quick, accurate, and effective in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter having a body composed of two parts, whereby the device may be easily cleaned, adjusted, or repaired, and to provide a removable spindle,on which can be adjusted knives, graters, or the like, as desired.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention complete, the top being opened and shown closed in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical central cross-section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Figs. 4 and 5 are elevations of a grater and knife disk, respectively. Fig. 6 is an edge elevation of the cuttingdisk; and Fig. 7 is a similar view of a portion of the disk, showing means for adjusting the knives.
Referring by letters to the drawings, a is.
through the said supports, Which forms an,
additional fastening against lateral strain caused by the disk working against the side of the box while cutting.
. -g is a spindle working in the journal-boxes h, one half of which are carried by the body and the other half by the top I), registering and coincidingwhen the top is closed.
A suitable crank or handle 1' is provided to revolve the knife or grater disks j, the knifedisk being provided with a series of radial blades 70, arranged in a slanting position, resting in slanting seats and adjustably secured over the radial slots, leaving a space through which the paring, sliced, or cut substance passes to the bodyof the cutter and out through a suitable opening or dischargehopper Z.
The spindle or shaft is provided with a sleeve m, screw-threadedon its end and fits over the spindle h and is adjustably secured thereto by means of a set-screw. The sleeve has lateral bearing enough on the shaft to prevent any wabbling or oscillating motion.
In the movable topbis a receiving-hopper b, into which the vegetables, &c., are poured, sliding down and bearing against the roughened surface of the grater-disk or against the sharp projecting edges of the radial knives k, which revolve and cutthe meat or'fruit and allow it to pass to the discharging-hopper and out of the cutter.
It will be observed that the cutting-knives are removable and interchangeable as Well as adjustable, and it will be seen that the seats set-screws being adjusted to just the thickness required and the shoulder in the disk receiving the thrust given to the knives in their operation. These set screws n are screwthreaded in the disk and entered from the back, so that their ends will come in contact with the back of the knife and increase or decrease its cutting capacity, so that it will be seen that the inclined seat or bed'in the disk, the inclined knives set at an angle, the two holding-screws, and the two adjusting or set screws are essential to the proper working of the cutting-knives, which in this device is a very valuable feature.
The disks are adjustable on the spindle by means of the sleeve m. Said sleeve is screwthrcaded on and near its end, so that the knives and disks are adjustable and removable separately and independently of each other for joint operation.
The operation of the device is very simple and is as follows: The grater and knife disks being interchangeable either may be adj usted as desired. The top is then closed and fastened by means of the fastenings (Z, and the rod f, passing through the upright supports 0 and the disk, revolved by any suitable power or by hand by means of the crank and handle 1'. The vegetables are then placed in the receiving-hopper b and are cut or grated by the revolving disks j, the sliced or grated portion passing into the body a of the cutter and out through the discharging-hopper Z in the bottom of the device.
Having thus fully described my invention and it being evident that various slight changes might be made in the forms, construction, and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but consider myself entitled to all such changes as fall within the spirit of my invention.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination in a cutter of the upper and lower hinged sections, each section carryin g two halves of the journal-bearings, supports for said lower section, the support on one side forming clamps to clamp it to the edge of a table, and the supports on the opposite sides having flanges and adapted to be screwed to the surface of the table, one of said supports 011 each side extending above the upper section to receive a clamping-bolt to retain the said sections in position, and the other two supports extending above the lower section forming guides and stops for the upper section, against lateral pressure from the disk said disk being mounted upon a shaft in said bearings, all arranged for joint operation as set forth.
2. The combination in a cutter such as described having the upper and lower sections supports for the lower sections, the cutterdisks carried in thejournals of said sections, the spindle of each disk having a removable sleeve, said sleeve being screw-threaded on the end for the interchange of cutter-disks, saiddiskshavingcorresponding female screwthreads in their hubs, and adjustable 011 the spindle, and provided with adj nstable cutterknives, the knives resting in slanting grooves, the backs of said grooves forming supports for the knives whereby the strain is taken from the holding-screws, the upper sections being secured from lateral strain by the said support, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS MACKE. lVitnesses:
