SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,713, dated May 31, 1898. Application fil d March 1,1897. SerialNo. 625,452. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Builders Hardware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to builders hardware, and has for its object to provide novel means whereby the position of the screws or other attaching means of hinges and other articles may be readily adjusted, so as to prevent such screws from entering between the door jambs and frame, and also for enabling the position of a screw to be changed in the event of the old screw-hole wearing too large, and in any case where it is desirable to engage the screw or other fastener with new wood.
While the improvement will be described and illustrated as applied to hinges, it is to be distinctly and expressly understood that said improvement is applicable to hardware in general and that it may therefore be used upon any article and at any point where it is desirable for any reason to change the position of the attaching means.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improvement in use in connection with a hinge. Fig. 2 shows the improved hinge applied to a door-frame, showing by dotted lines the manner in which the joint between the door frame and jamb may be dodged by the attaching means. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the hinge. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of a portion of a hinge, showing the manner in which the same is recessed and perforated to receive the fasteners. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective 'view of the movable or rotatable section. Fig. 6 is a' similar view of said section, taken from the reverse side.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a plate which for the purpose of illustration is shown to consist of one leaf or member of a hinge, while 2 designates the other leaf or member of the hinge. The leaf 2 is provided with countersunk openings 3 for the reception of the screws or other fastening means by which the hinge is connected to a door, blind, or other article. The plate 1 may be provided with similar countersunk openings 4 for the reception of screws. The plate 1 is provided at one or more points with recesses 5, which are preferably circular in form and adapted to receive a plate 6, which is also preferably circular or disk-shaped and provided with a single opening 7, preferably countersunk to receive the tapering head of the screw or other form of fastener. The plate 6 is provided upon one side with a central stud S, which is adapted to enter an opening 9, located centrally of the recess 5 and forming a bearing for the stud 8, so that the plate 6 may be rotated within the recess 5. The thickness of the plate 6 corresponds, preferably, with the depth of the recess 5, so that the outer surface of said plate 6 lies flush with the surface of the plate 1. The plate 1 is also provided with a plurality of openings 10, extending through the base or floor of the recess 5 and arranged in a circular series around the central opening 9, the said openings 10 being thereby eccentric to the opening 9. The openings 10 are also countersunk to receive the heads of the attaching devices. By means of the construction described it will be seen that the plate 6 may be rotated with relation to the plate 1 for bringing the opening 7 into alinement with any one of the openings 10, so that the attaching device or screw may pass through both of said openings. In this manner the attaching device may be adjusted into a number of different positions, thereby enabling the joint in the door-frame to be dodged, or for enabling the position of the screw to be changed in case the original hole wears too large to retain the screw.
If desired, all of the holes 10 may receive attaching devices with the exception of one, which is left to receive the final attaching device, the said openings 10 being preferably countersunk, so as to receive the heads of such attaching devices and permit the outer surfaces thereof to lie flush with the base or floor of the recess 5. The plate 6 is then applied over the heads of the attaching devices and the final attaching device is passed through the opening 7 of the plate 6 and through the remaining hole 10, which completes the operation of attaching the plate 1 to its support. WVhere the plate 1 constitutes the leaf or member of the hinge, said plate is secured to the door-jamb or windowframe,-as the case may be.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the position of the attaching device may be readily adjusted and changed according to requirement and that while the plate 1 has a number of openings for the reception of the screw which passes through each plate 6 only one opening for each plate 6 is visible at a time, and thus only a single screw-head or attaching device is visible.
In the drawings I have shown two plates 6; but it will be understood that this number may be increased or diminished at will. The principle of the invention is applicable to all articles of hardware, and especially to builders hardware, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to its use in connection with hinges or even analogous articles.
If desired, the central opening 9 may be countersunk upon the rear side of the plate, as shown at 16, and the end of the stud 8 may be headed or riveted, as indicated at 17, to prevent its displacement.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a hinge; a plate having a plurality of openings in combinationwi th a plate covering said openings, andjalso provided with an opening, the latter plate being movable with relation to the hinge-plate for bringing its.
opening into alinement with one of the openings in the plate, substantially as described.
2. In a hinge, the combination with the leaves thereof, of a device movably connected therewith and having an opening therein for the reception of a screw, whereby the movement of said device within a predetermined limit brings the opening therein into alinement with one of a series of openings in the hinge-leaf, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
