ALFRED M. TODD, OF BORDEAUX, FRANCE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 604,180, dated May 1'7, 1898.
Application filed October 27, 1897. Serial No. 656,49 7. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED M. TODD, a citizen of France, residing at Bordeaux, France, have invented a certain new and amusing Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and amusing toy, and has for its object to provide a vehicle which resembles a body and is adapted to travel upon a smooth surface and be propelled by a sail.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved toy, and Fig. 2 a bottom plan thereof.
This device consists of a body or deck A, preferably composed of a board of the general shape of a boat, having wheels B, journaled under the front portion thereof in suitable brackets O, and a steering -wheel D, journaled in a caster-bracket E, which projects through the body and has a lever F secured thereto, whereby the position of the wheel D may be determined, and I prefer that two washers G and H shall be secured to the caster-bracket in such manner as to create sufficient friction upon the board A to hold the caster-bracket in whatever position it is set against the tendency imparted thereto by the wheel to change this position. A mast I projects upward from the board A and carries a sail J, which is preferably rectangular, and the lower yard K of this sail is attached to the board by the cords L, so that its position relative to the board may be adjusted to bring about the general effect of tacking.
From this description it will be seen that a toy made in accordance with my improvement may be placed upon a smooth surface and its course directed by the adjustment of the steering-roll and given forward progression by a light breeze blowing against the sail, thus representing a boat sailing in the water.
What I claim is- A toy consisting of a body, a mast carrying a sail arranged on said body, two wheels journaled at the forward portion of said body, a bracket pivotally secured at the center near the rear portion of the body, a washer secured on the bracket on each side of the body, whereby the friction contact of the washers on said body will hold the bracket in any adjustment, a wheel journaled in said bracket, and a lever for operating the bracket, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED M. TODD.
