SPACER-BAR FOR WIRE FENCES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Spacer-Bars for Use on Wire Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

I My invention relates to improvements in adjustable spacer-bars for use on wire fences. The object of my invention is to provide a practical device adapted to tenaciously ride, slide upon, and hold the horizontal wires of a fence a predetermined distance apart, so that the operator may be enabled to uniformly and quickly secure the wires to the posts and when desired attach suitable stays to the wires, whereby a neat, uniform, and inexpensive fence of the class mentioned may be had, all of which I will more fully describe hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my adjustable spacerbar as it appears when in use on a wire fence and locked to slide thereon. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same device as it appears when in position for either attachment to or removal from the fence.

Similar letters and figures of reference when they appear indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a fiat vertical bar provided with a series of circular openings or holes 2. A number of hooks 3 are adjustably secured the desired distance apart in the openings 2, found in the bar 1, by means of nuts 4, the hooks 3 being preferably so adjusted that the downward or free end of each of which will lie a distance outward from one of the edges of the bar 1 and in a plane with or approximately with the vertical plane of thefront edge e of the said bar 1. A horizontal arm 5, having bend 6 and bifurcated end 7, is adjustably secured to the bar 1 by means of a bolt passing through one of the openings 2 therein. The free end of said arm 5 is provided with a pivoted catch 8, adapted to disengagingly lock one of the wires X of the fence in the bifurcated end 7 of the arm 5 mentioned. The apparatus is then completed by the addition of brace 9, carrying tool-box 10, and which brace 9 is secured to the arm 5 and to the bar 1 by means of bolts or equivalent device in the usual manner. In operation the horizontal wires X are firs fastened the desired distance apart to an end post of the fence, then. tightly stretched and similarly adjusted and fastened to the other end post. If the fenceis too long for thepurpose, in that event it is plainthe wires X may be fastened first to an end post and vthen to an intermediate one a suitable distance therefrom. The device is then adjusted to correspond to the gage of the fence, with a hook arranged to accommodate each wire, and is mounted on the wires X, locked, and slid on said wires X a distance past the first intermediate post. The wires X are. then fastened to this post and the device slid on 1 the wires X to a corresponding position adjacent to the next post, and so on from post to post until all have been similarly treated and the wires X suitably secured thereto.

The device herein set forth may be used independently or used in connection with a number of the various fence-machines in the market, and is especially adapted for use in connection with the hand-machine for applying stay-wires to wire fences set forth in Letters Patent of the United States to Ambrose B. Bowen, dated December 24, 1895, and numbered 552,037, in place of the oscillating spacer therein shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. An adjustable spacer-bar for use on wire 5 fences, consisting of a perforated vertical bar provided with a number of hooks, a horizontal arm having a bifurcated end and held on said bar, combined with a catch on said arm; substantially as described.
