Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. BECHTOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CUFF-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,396, dated May 3, 1898.
Application filed February 25, 1897- ,Serial No. 625,067. (No model.)
, ments in link cuff-buttons, and has for its objects, first, to so construct the same that the application to and removal from the cuifs is rendered easier, and, secondly, to prevent the heads from turning in the buttonholes.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as fully pointed out in the following specification and claim.
The nature of my invention will best be understoodwhen described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional end view showing the buttons applied to a cuff. Fig. 2 is a view of the cuff-buttons, taken from the Fig. 3 is an inside view of one of the-heads. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 t, Fig. 3, with the link removed. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, numeral 1 designates the two heads having concaved or recessed backs, said heads having any suitable configuration. To each of said heads is secured an eye 2, which lies wholly within the cavity of said head, so that it does not inter fere with the passage of the head through the buttonholes. The heads are connected by a link 3, made in any usual manner, but being substantially flat or rectangular in cross-section, so that it offers resistance to turning after its passage through the buttonholes. In
the present example I have shown the link formed of a flat band made substantially S shape and having its overlapping central ends united by suitable meanssuch, for instance, as the rivet 4. In practice I make the eyes of square Wire, so that the heads do not hang loosely, but are held either at right angles to the link or parallel with the same when turned into these positions, the link acting as a spring. To permit movement of the overlapping ends of the link when the heads are turned, said ends are slotted, as at 6, to permit play.
What I claim as new is A cuff-button having its heads concaved or recessed on their backs, attaching eyes of square or like cross-section secured to the heads and lying wholly within the cavities of the same so as not to interfere with the ,pas-
sage of the heads through the buttonholes,
an S -shape link having overlapping ends slidably secured with respect to the central limb of the link, and passed through the attaching-eyes of the heads; said link' acting as a spring at its points of connection with the attaching-eyes to hold the heads either at right angles to the link or in planes substantially parallel to the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of December, 1896.
