SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,201, dated April 26, 1898.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, J OHN'A. OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonham, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in J ewelers Stone- Setting Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a novel, simple, efficien t, and economical instrument particularly designed for holding and mounting or setting studs, earrings, and other articles of jewelry, and wherein a part supported against tipping from an approximately perpendicular plane is freely rotatable, while another part constituting a supporting-base is constructed to be firmly held between the jaws of a vise or other holder, the construction being such that the stud, ear-ring, or other article can be firmly gripped by the rotatable part and the latter can be turned from time to time as occasion may demand while the operator executes the work required in mounting or setting a jewel or stone in the stud, ear-ring, or other article.
The object of my invention is accomplished in the manner and by the means hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, slightly magnified, of an instrument constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein The numeral 1 indicates a base-piece, the body of which is cylindrical and is constructed at its lower end with a pendent neck 2, having fiat parallel sides 3, or otherwise constructed, angular in cross-section, so that it is adapted to be placed between and held firmly inastationary position by the jaws of a vise or any other holder suitable for the purpose. The upper part of the device or instrument is in the form of a cylindrical body or section 4, sitting squarely upon the upper end of the cylindrical base 1,and so supported, as will hereinafter appear, that while this up per body or section is susceptible of freely rotating axially it is firmly supported in an upright or perpendicular position, so that it cannot be rocked or tipped laterally or out of a perpendicular plane when in use. The cylindrical body or section 4: is constructed or provided with upright elastic jaws 5, having their upper ends bent laterally toward each other to provide inwardly-projecting gripping-lips 6, adapted to grip and firmly hold the shank of a stud, ear-ring, or other article of jewelry which is to be mounted or set with a jewel or stone. The two jaws are operated to cause their lips to grip or release the shank of the. stud, ear-ring, or other article through the medium of a horizontal screw 7, having a suitable finger-piece 8,by which the screw may be turned to operate the jaws.
The upper body or section 4t of the instrument is rendered susceptible of free axial rotation by providing its lower end with a cylindrical pendent journal or spindle 9, extending through a socket 10, formed centrally in the cylindrical base-piece 1 and extending through the angular or fiat-sided neck 2. The journal or spindle 9 is held in permanentconnection with the base-piece by a sleeve 12, engaged with the lower end of the journal or spindle, which prevents it being displaced from the base-piece without, however, interfering with the free axial rotation of the journal or spindle in such base-piece.
The construction of the cylindrical basepiece with an angular or flat-sided neck at its lower end and the construction of the freely-rotatable body or section with its perpendicular journal or spindle and its elastic jaws provide a simplified instrument for the use of a jeweler or other person in mounting or setting jewels or stones in studs, ear-rings, and similar jewelry.
The construction is simple, and the device is efficient and economical, and when held by a vise or other holder the freely-rotatable part is firmly supported in a perpendicular position and cannot tip laterally in any direction, so that a strong and substantial structure is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An instrument for settingj ewels orstones in studs and the like, consisting of a base piece having a pendent, angular neck designed to be held by a vise, or other holder, an axially-rotating carrier journaled to the base-piece, constantly held upright thereby, and having two elastic jaws provided with inwardly-projecting lips for gripping the shank of the stud, or other article of jewelry, and means for operating the jaws, substantially as described.
2. An instrument forsettingjewels or stones in studs and the like, consisting of a cylindrical base-piece having a pendent fiat-sided neck constructed to be held by a vise, or other holder, an axially-rotating cylindrical carrier having a journal or spindle mounted in the base-piece and two elastic jaws provided with inwardly-projecting lips for gripping the shank of a stud, or other article of jewelry, said carrier being constantly held upright by the base-piece, and a screw for operating the two elastic jaws, substantially as described.
