SPECIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent N0. 601,971, dated April 5, 1898. Application tiled February 16, 1897. Serial No. 623,653. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DAVID A. LEE and THOMAS E. LEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Centreville, in the county of Ap-y panoose and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Mining-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in mining-machines.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of mining-machine shown and described in Letters Patent No. 563,776, granted July 14, 1896, to James E. Lee, David A. Lee, and Thomas E. Lee, and to provide simple and effective means for raising and lowering the olf side of the mining-machine to cause the cutter to dip or inoline downward into the substance mined or cut and also to enable the cutter to travel in a horizontal plane while the machine is traveling over an uneven bottom or road-bed.
A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the supportingframe, strengthen they same, and afford ready access to the motor when desired.
The invention-consists inthe construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanyingvdrawings, Figure 1 is a perspective viewvof a mining-machine constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the Arear thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the front of the machine. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 designates a mining-m achine frame consisting of a central casing 2 and front and rear platforms 3 and 4, formed integrally with the casing, which is provided with a removable top or cap section 5, the upper and lower sections of the casing being provided at their contiguous edges with registering lugs 6, receiving screws or bolts 7. The casing,which is rectangular in cross-section, being substantially cubical, is provided at the front and back of the lower section or body portion with the casing may be readily removed to afford access to the motor.
The mining machine is supported by grooved wheels 11, running on anged rails 12, and toothed wheels 13, running on a rackbar 14. The flanged rail 12 constitutes one side of the track, and the rack-bar 14, which is constructed as described in the above-mentioned patent, is located at the other side of the track, and the mining-machine frame is provided with suitable bearings for the stubaxles 15, upon which the toothed wheels are mounted. 4
The longitudinal shaft lO,which is arranged substantially as shown in the said patent, is connected at its rear end by beveled gear*- Wheels 16 and 17 with a vertical shaft 18, and the latter has its lower end connected by simillar gear-wheels 19 and .20 with a transverse cutter-shaft 21.' The upper portion of the bracket 23 is circular and is provided at itsv periphery with teeth 26, which vmesh with a horizontal screw or worm 27, disposed longi- ICO ' the cutter-shaft and is secured at right angles to the frame by a bolt 29 or other suitable fastening or lookin g device, and the bolt is adapted to be readily removed to permit the cutter to be swung around and adjusted while the machine is in motion.
The grooved Wheels 11, which are located at the front and back of the frame, are each mounted in a forked or bifurcated lower portion of a vertical standard 30, provided with a tubular Lipper portion passing through an opening of the adjacent platform, and thev tubular portion, which is interiorly threaded, j is engaged by an adj usting-screw 31, swiveled to and depending from a support 32, The screw is provided at its upper end with a handlever 33, adapted to be rotated to force the tubular standard downward or draw it upward to raise and lower "the adjacent side of the mining-machine, and by this construction the auger or cutter may be caused to dip into the coal or other mineral mined or may be caused to run horizontally while the machine is traveling over an uneven or slanting bottom or bed.
The vertically-adjustable standard 30 is provided in its outer face with a vertical groove or way to receive the key, which is mounted in a similar groove or way of the frame of the machine, whereby the standard is held against accidental rotation and the wheel is maintained in perfect alinement. The support 32 is substantially inverted-U- shaped, being provided with an opening for j the passage of the adjusting-screw and the tubular standard, and it is secured upon the platform of the frame by means of suitable bolts or screws passing through the same and engaging threaded sockets of the'sides of the support. l
In order to feed the machine forward automatically, the front toothed wheel is connected by gearing with the longitudinal 4mo- 1 tor-shaft, and as the motor-shaft is rotated to eifect the operation of cutting it also rotates the front toothed wheel and gradually ladvances the machine, feeding the cutter for- Ward. The frontend of the motor-shaft `is provided with a worm 33a, which meshes with l a gear-Wheel 34 of a 'front vertical shaft 35, i and the latter is provided at its lower endl 'with a worm 36, meshing with a pinion 37 of l the rear axle. A slow, steady, automatic feeding of the ma-l chine, and by rotating the cutter backwardi the machine is reversed or moved rearward. l
Y The gear-wheel 34 is thrown into and outl of operation by a clutch-lever 38 in order tol permit the cutter to operate while the m'achine `is stationary. The clutch-lever 38, j which is fulcrumed between its ends on a substantially U-shaped support 39, is connected l at its innerend with a sliding clutch-section 40, connected with the front vertical shaft 35 by a feather or spline and adapted to be moved This construction causes al upward and downward to interlock with `and l 4 It will be seen that the frame of the minlng-machine is strong and durable and that, while affordingrahousing for a motor, it enables the latter to be readily inspected when desired. It will also be apparent that the machine is adapted to be raised and lowered at one side to tilt or cant it for causing the cutter to dip into the coal or other mineral mined, and also for enabling the cutter to run horizontally when the machine is traveling over an uneven or inclined track or bottom.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit orsacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is- 1. In a mining-machine, the combination of a frame, provided at one side with bearings, a stub-axle journaled in `said bearings and provided with a carrying-Wheel, a support mounted on the frame at the opposite side thereof, a vertically-movable standard passing through an opening of the frame and having a bifurcated lower portion and a tubular upper portion the latterbeinginteriorly threaded, a wheel j ournaled in the lower portion of the standard, a vertical adjustingscrew swiveled to. and depending from 'the support,`said screw engaging the tubular porz j tion of the standard and adapted to raise and lower'the frame, and a motor-shaft connected with and actuating `the stub-shaft, substantially as described.
2. In a mining-machine, the combination of a frame provided at one side with bearings, a stub-axle journaled in said bearings and having a carrying wheel, a support mounted on the frame at the opposite side thereof, a vertically-movable tubular 'standard passing through the frame and having an interiorly-threaded tubular upperportion, a wheel carried bythe standard, an adjusting-screw swiveled to the bracket or support and engaging the standard, the vertical shaft 35 journaled on the frame, the longitudinal motor-shaft, gearing connecting the lowerend of the shaft 35 with the stub-axle, a worm arranged on the motor-shaft, the gear-wheel 34 meshing with the worm and mounted on `the vertical shaft 35, the clutch-section 41 connected with the gear-Wheel 34, the sliding 'clutch-section 40 keyed to the shaft, and a clutch-lever'fulcrumed on the frame and connected with the sliding clutch-section, substantially as described.
3. In a mining-machine, the combination IOO IIO
of a frame provided with an opening, an inverted U -shaped support mounted on the frame over the opening, a vertically-movable standard mounted in the opening of the frame and having a tubular upper portion and a bifuroated lower portion, the upper portion being interioriy threaded, a wheel journaied in the lower portion of the standard, and a vertical adjusting-screw swiveled to and depending from the support, said screw engaging the tubular portion of the standard and adapted to raise and lower the frame, substantiaily as described.
