hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked'thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys or puzzles; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a new toy or puzzle which ofiers abundant opportunities to exercise good judgment and skill in manipulating the same and which at the same time alfords great amusement.

A further object of the invention is to provide a toy or puzzle of the character to be hereinafter fully set forth which is of a simple and durable construction and may be cheaply manufactured.

The invention therefore consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and fully described in the appended specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of my improved toy or puzzle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, illustrating in connection therewith the employment of a cover. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are plan views of the toy or puzzle, illustrating in said views the different positions of certain balls or marbles employed in connection with the toy or puzzle during the manipulation of the same. 7

Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.-

In said views, A indicates a suitable case .or box, made of cardboard or other desirable material, provided with the base a, the verp'artsof the box formed by the tapering sides (1 as will'be clearly seen from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. Said box or case A may be provided with a removable cover 6%, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

The base and sides of the box are, preferably, differently coloredas, for instance, at a the base and sides may be colored red and at as the base and sides may be colored blue,

or any other desirable colors may be employed, thus producing a box or case one half of which is of one color, while the other half of the box or case is of another color.

In the middle of the box or case A is placed a suitable ball or marble b, of a dark color, preferably black, and upon the red space or of the box or case I place three other balls or marbles c, of a blue color, or preferably of the same color as the said portion a, of the box; but of course it Will be evident that the number of balls 0 and 0 may be changed at will, and said balls or marbles b and c and 0 may be differently colored. As will be seen from the several figures of the drawings, said balls 0 and c are all preferably of the same size, Whilethe central and single ball or marble 1) is of a slightly-increased diameter.-

The object of the toy or puzzle is to'place the several balls or marbles b, c, and c in the box or case A'in their respective positions (illustrated in Fig. 1) and by taking the box in the hand and by proper manipulation to roll all the balls or marbles c from the portion a of the box or case past the larger ball or marble 1) upon the differently-colored space a of the box, and also to roll the balls or marbles 0 past the larger ball or marble b from their previously-occupied space a upon the space a of the box and causing the several balls or marbles b, c, and c to assume the positions illustrated in Fig. 5.

In Fig. 3 I have illustrated one of the smaller balls or marbles, as c, passing from the space a of the box or case A past the larger ball or marble b upon the space a of the box, and in Fig. l'is illustrated the jammed position of one of the smaller balls or marbles with the larger ball or marble b, the passingspace, owing to the angular or tapering arrangement of the sides a of the box or case, being of necessity limited, which compels the passing of the smaller balls or marbles by the larger ball or marble b at or nearly at the middle of the box or case, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of said Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, what I- claim is- 1. A toy or puzzle comprising a suitable box or case, having an gularly-arranged sides and a base all tapering toward the ends of the box, to form at or near the middle of the box, a portion a which is wider than the remaining parts of the box, and said base having differently-colored portions, and balls or marbles in said box, consisting, of a single ball or marble of a color different from the colored portions of the box or case, and two sets of balls or marbles of colors corresponding to said colored portions of the box or case, said smaller balls or marbles being adapted to pass the larger ball or marble only at the center of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A toy or puzzle comprising a suitable box or case, having angularly-arranged sides and a base all tapering toward the ends of the box, to form at or near the middle of the box, a portion a which is wider than the remaining parts of the box, and said base having difierently-colored portions, and balls or marbles in said box, consisting, of a single ball or marble of a color different from the colored portions of the box or case, and two sets of balls or marbles of colors correspondin g to said colored portions of the box or case, said sets of balls or marbles all being of the same size, and said single ball or marble be ing of a larger size, said smaller balls or marbles being adapted to pass the larger ball or marble only at the center of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. A toy or puzzle comprising a suitable box or case, having a base and sides a tapering toward its ends, said base and sides having differently-colored portions a and a, and

balls or marbles movable in said box, consisting, of a single ball or marble of a color different from the colored portions of the box or case, and two sets of balls or marbles of colors corresponding to said colored portions of the box or case, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. A toy or puzzle comprising a suitable box or case, having a base and sides a tapering toward its ends, said base and sides having differently-colored portions a and a, and balls or marbles movable in said box, consisting, of a single ball or marble of a color different from the colored portions of the box or case, and two sets of balls or marbles of colors corresponding to said colored portions of the box or case, said sets of balls or marbles all being of the same size, and said single ball or marble being of a larger size, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A toy or puzzle comprising a suitable box or case, having angularly-arranged sides and a base all tapering toward the ends of the box, to form at or near the middle of the box, a portion a which is wider than the remaining parts of the box, and balls or marbles movable in said box, consisting, of a large ball or marble b, and difierently-colored sets of smaller balls or marbles cand c, said smaller balls or marbles being adapted to pass the larger ball or marble only at the center of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. A toy or puzzle comprising a suitable box or case, having a base and sides a tapering toward its ends, and balls or marbles movable in said box, consisting, of a large ball or marble b, and differently-colored sets of smaller balls or marbles c and a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
