and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this v The object of this invention is to furnish an instructive amusement for children; and it consists in a novel i construction of toy or building-blocks, in the-form of cubes divid'ed diagonally in planes perpendicular to two of their sides, the blocks having letters or numerals marked upon them in such a way as to admit, in 'connection the-peculiar shape of the block, of amuch greaternumber of combinations, and to eallrforth'much more ingenuity in theii` employment, than has been thecase with the toy-blocks heretofore devised. 'To enable others to understand the' nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describeit, with reference to the drawings. y

The blocks are formed simply by dividing cubes diagonallyv in planes perpendicular to two of, their sides, and consequently have their ends three-sided, or 'triangular inform, as shown at a, while Atwo of the sides, b b, are square, and the remaining one', formed by cutting through -or dividing the cube, as aforesaid, is a -rectangular, quadrilateral in shape. This five-sided shapeallows the blocks to bearrangedwith reference to each other in various ways, so as to form a toybuildingI which couldz'ynot Vbe, constructed with the ordinary cubical or sii-sided blocks. Complete letters or numerals of 'any desired form or configuration may be marked upon the sides, Zlib, of the blocks, either by first printing them upon paper or other suitable material, and then pasting them to the said sides, or by painting them' directly upon the same, o1 by any" other suitable means. Upon each of the triangular sides or ends, a, is marked a portion of a letter or numeral, in such a way that whenthe rectangular quadrilateral sides of two certain blocks are placed `together,they'form a cube, the letter or numeral, as the casemay be, will be formed complete. upon the contiguous ends. of the two blocks,.as clearly shown in igs. 1 and 3. By this construction of the` blocks, and the within-described disposition of the letters upon them, great opportunity is alorded for the exercisefof the mental faculties, not only in the arrangementof the blocks themselves, asin making toy-buildings and` similar objects, but in the selection` and joining of those blocks, the ends or sides, 11, of which are marked'with portions of the same letter or numeral, as hereinbefore set forth. v
