SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,371, dated March 29, 1898. Application flled September 25,1897. Serial No. 653,020. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHAN OZE1LER,-cabinet-maker, of Arad, in the Empire of Austria- Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door and Similar Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object an improved lock, the bolt of which, operated by turning the handle-knob, serves at the same time for locking the door or the like by being caused by means of keys to enter the keeper. This lock can be fitted to either right or left hand doors.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side and front views of a lock which is fitted to right-hand doors. Figs. 3 and 4 show a side and front View of a lock which is fitted to lefthand doors. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are details of this look.
The mechanism is contained in a casing A, in which a lever or cam a a is provided having a square aperture a for receiving the handle and carrying two pins a a at its opposite ends, one pin a being normally raised by a spring a arranged around the handle-spindle a and resting with its other end against a pin is, secured to the lock-casing A, whereby the handle is returned to its normal position when it is released. The movement of the handle beyond this normal position is prevented by the hinge-joint b of two levers b c, which are acted upon by thesecond pin a coming in contact with the casing of the lock. This pin a further serves to cause the bolt e to return within the casing when the knob is turned, said pin a causing the lever 19 to turn about its pivot s, secured to the casing, whereby the second lever c, connected to it by a pin or hinge-joint b", is caused to move backward. This movement of the lever, owing to its engagement with a tooth or stop 6 on the bolt e, Fig. 5, withdraws the bolt 6 into the casing. As soon as the handle is released the bolt c is returned into its normal position by the head Z of a springn, secured to a projection or pin Z on the casing. This normal position of for guiding the bolt 8 by engaging with a groove 6 therein. When the bolt e is in this first normal position, it can be withdrawn into the casing by the handle as well as by the key, and the door thus opened. When the key is turned in direction I, it engages with a tooth c of the bolt and pushes the latter back into the casing. If, however, the key is turned in the opposite direction I I, then the key raises thetumbler d against the head of the spring Z till its tooth cl is raisedabove the projection 19 and the bolt 6 is thrown forward by the spring P. Then the bolt is in its second locked position, (dotted lines, Fig. 1,) in which the face d of the tumbler cl is pressed against the projection 19 by the head of the spring Z In this position of the bolt the door is locked, and it can be opened only by means of the key. This position is secured by the tumbler d being in a higher position and holding the lever c,engagingwith it,also in a higher position than before, so that if the knob were now turned said lever instead of moving backward would only be pressed against the fixed projection 70, against which the spring of the handle-lever presses. If it is desired to open the door, the key must be turned in direction I, whereupon the tumbler d will be raised till its tooth d is raised above the projection 19, with which it was engaged. If the key is turned still farther, it will press the bolt c back against the spring-head Z till the tooth cl of the tumbler (1 falls behind the projection p under the influence of the pressureof" the springhead Z at which moment the tooth Z is released, and the spring-head Z holds the bolt 6 in its first normal position. If the key is farther turned in direction I, the key will fulfil the function of the handle, and the bolt will be completely withdrawn, Fig. 3, dotted lines.
The bolt can be fitted both to right and left hand doors by making the bolt 6 symmetrical on either side ofits axis 00 a, Fig. 7. If the bolt 6 is turned around, together with the front plate B, the locking-face e of the bolt 6, if itwas before on the left-hand side, will now be on the right-hand side, and if it was used for a right-hand door it can now be used for a left-hand one.
