L. KIEVIT.
BOTTLE No. 599,711.
Patented Mar. 1,1898.
mmv ro'n "A TTORNEYJ WIT/ Bus.- C]? 4? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS KIEVIT, or ALBANY, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE.
Application filed August '7, 1897.
-T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIs KIEVIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved vessel of this class which, having been once filled, cannot be emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottleand the neck thereof provided with my improvement.
In the drawing forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by letters of reference, and in said drawing I have shown at A the upper part of a bottle provided with a neck B, which is comparatively short and centrally of which is formed an annular groove 0. The groove 0 is quite deep, and that part of the neck above said g'roove may be broken ofi by a quick blow with any suitable instrument or by striking the same on a table or other article.
. In practice after the bottle has been filled I force into the neck below the groove 0 an ordinary stopper D, and I also provide a supplemental stopper E, which is composed of glass and in which is preferably formed an annular groove F, in which is placed a rubber band G, on which is placed cement ina plastic condition, after which the supplemental stopper E is forced into the neck, and said supplemental stopper cannot be removed without breaking off the upper portion of the neck. I also provide a sleeve H, of rubber or similar material, and which is adapted to inclose the neck and to be slid downwardly thereover, and when the lower end of said. sleeve rests upon'the upper part of the bottle adjacent to the neck the upper end thereof will cover the groove 0, as clearly shown in the drawing, and the upper end of said sleeve is also provided with an outwardly and .upwardly directed flange or rim K.
It is not absolutely essential to use the rubber band F in connection with the supplethe object thereof and SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,711, dated March 1, 1898.
Serial in. 647,467. (No model.)
parts assembled and it is required to empty 7 the bottle, the upper portion of the neck is broken away, as hereinbefore described, and the upper portion of the sleeve II immediately contracts around the lower portion of the neck and the flange K forms a spout or discharge -nozzle for the bottle.
The sleeve K always conceals the groove 0 and prevents the accidental breaking off of the upper part of the neck, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which does not add materially to the cost of the bottle and which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
In practiceI may also place upon the up per portion of the neck a trade-mark or the name of the proprietor or manufacturer of the contents of the bottle and also a description of the bottle or the neck thereof and of the method of its operation. I
. Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 In a bottle or similar vessel, the combination of a body, a neck provided with an annular depression therein,a stopper removably seated below said groove a stopper permanently seated in the neck above said groove, a rubber sleeve with an outwardly-directed lip whereby protection is afforded to the weakened portion of said neck and to the broken edges of said neck upon the removable or the upper part thereof, said lip simultaneously assuming such position as will facilitate the pouring of the liquor, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as- LOUIS KIEVIT.
