UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BETSEY SHERMAN, OF TOLEDO, \VASHINGTON.
COMBINED BOOK-REST AND FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,574, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed S t b 29, 1897. Serial No. 653,495. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BETsEY SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lewis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Book -Rest and Fan, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined bookrest and fan.
The object of the invention is to provide a stand having a fan, operated by a foot-pedal, and a book rest or support hinged or pivoted tothe stand, and arms hinged to the stand-' part of this application, Figure 1 is a top view of my invention. Fig.2 is an end view of Fig. 1 with the parts folded, in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a side view with the rest and arms folded.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The stand is preferably of rectangular shape and is composed of legs 1, rounds 2 and 3, and ends 4. The legs have suitable rollers or casters 5.
A horizontal fan-shaft 6 is journaled in the top ends 4 and has a sleeve 7, provided with fan-vanes 8, secured thereto by set-screws 9. Said shaft is operated by a crank 10, pitman 11, and foot-pedal 12. The latter is held by a rod 13, j ournaled in the rounds 3. A receptacle 14. issecured at one side of the stand to hold the fan when not in use.
The book rest or support 15 consists of a thin board having a central U-shaped cut-' the stand.
out through which the fan is revolved, and
the ends 16 upon each side of the cut-out are hinged at 17 to the stand. The outer edge of the rest has a bead 18 to prevent a book slipping off the rest.
The rest or support 15 is held in adjustable position, in accordance with the angle desired, by arms 19, hinged at 20 to the base of The free ends of the arms engage notches or teeth 21 on the under side of the rest and so hold it in rigid position.
It will be observed that the fan can fan the patient and the operator at the same time, leaving the hands of the latter free to engage in other work, if desired.
When the device is not in use, it can be readily and compactly folded, as shown in Fig. 3.
For transportation and storing the device takes up but little space after the rest and arms have been folded and the fan-sleeve removed and packed in its receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the stand, and the horizontal shaft, of the book-rest having a cutout, and hinged to the stand, and the fan connected to said shaft and adapted to be revolved through said cut-out, as set forth.
2. The combination with the stand, and the horizontal shaft, of the book-rest having ends hinged to the stand and an opening or cut-out between said ends, arms hinged to the standlegs, and the fan upon the shaft adapted to be revolved through said opening or cut-out.
3. The combination with the stand, and the horizontal shaft journaled therein, of the book-rest having a U-shaped opening, arms hinged to the stand-legs to elevate the rest, the sleeve secured to the said shaft, the fan attached to the sleeve, and means for revolving the fan through said opening, as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
BETSEY SHERMAN.
Witnesses:
GRANT ARNOLD, LIZZIE ARNOLD.
