Be it known that we, CHARLES AJVESTER- vELT and JAMES P. WALTERS, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas county, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Oiling Journal-Boxes, `of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to self-oiling journal boxes for railway rolling-stock and is additional to our improvement in car-axle lubricators patented January 15, 1895, United States Letters Patent No. 532,618.
The present invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts, hereinafter set forth and claimed7 whereby the aXle spindle or journal is adapted to carry a simple and effective revolving oil-elevator and is at the same time provided with a lateral controller which is direct and positive in its action and is readily adj usted or renewed should the lateral play become too great. The end bearing so formed is kept thoroughly lubricated. The

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a vertical longitudinal section through an improved self-oiling j ournal-boX, showing the journal, oil-elevator, and lateral controller-in elevation. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on the line z z, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the end piece of the journal detached, showing its inner end with the oilelevator in place thereon. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the end ,bearing detached, showing its outer end.

In common with the self-oiling journal-box set forth in our previous specification, forming part of said Letters Patent No. 532,618, this improved journal-box comprises a shellbody A, which is conveniently a single casting, the customary brass B above the journal of any known or improved construction, a spring-supported oil-holding cellar7 C in contact with the journal at bottom, a centrifugal oil-elevator D, revolving with the journal Serial No. 641,584. (No model.)
E within a housing preferably integral with said shell-body A, and a faceplate or end plate F and lid G, closing the outer endof the box, said housing of the revolving oil-elevator D forming at bottom an oil-chamber ct, Fig. l, and provided at its sides with opentopped oil-pockets ZJ, into which the oil is directly thrown by Said oil-elevator and from which it flows through centripetal passages c into the open top of said cellar C.
The shell-body A, brass B, cellar C, and lid Gr, together with the cellar-supporting spring H, form no part of the present invention and will not, therefore, be more particularly described.
The revolving oil-elevator D is preferably and conveniently formed by uniting two fiat strips of spring-steel by means of a pair of bolts d and springing them apart at midlength to embrace an end piece I, with which the journal E of the improved bearing is provided. The flat outer end of this end piece contacts directly with the inner surface of a non-rotary end bearing J, supported centrally by the end plate F, which is reinforced, as represented at 1 and 2 in Figs. 1 and 2, with reference to this function, said reinforced end plate, said non-rotary end bearing, and said end piece constituting together `a lateral controller 7 for determining the lateral movement of the truck relative to the axle.
The oil-elevator D keeps the end bearing thoroughly lubricated by the oil which reiiows down its respective blades as they revolve in the upper part of the housing. The oil-elevator is held between a beveled circumferential iiange 3 on the end piece I and the end of the journal E, the bevel of said iiange directing the oil to the face of the end bearing J and serving also to facilitate springing the oil-elevator into place. For attaching the end piece I the j ournalE is provided with a central longitudinal end bore 4, Fig. 2, and the end piece is constructed with a stem 5, which is keyed fast within said end bore by a pin 6, Fig. 2.
The end bearing J, being preferably of brass, is renewably attached to the end plate F and rendered non-rotary in the following manner: A central square socket 7 in the'in- IOO square boss 8 on the back of the end bearing,
and a central bolt 9, having its head held in like manner Within a square socketl 10 in the inner face of the end bearing, extends out- Ward through bolt-holes 11 and 12 in the end bearing and end plate, respectively, and is provided Witha screw-nut 13 at its outer end.
Having thus described said improvement,
We claim as our invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. An improved self-oiling journal-boX, for railway rolling-stock, comprising a reinforced end plate, a non-rotary end bearing supported bysaid end plate in line with the journal, an end piece carried by the journal to contact With said end bearing, and a revolving oil-elevator carried by said end piece and serving to lubricate said end bearing, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
2. The combination, in a self-oiling journal-box for railway rolling-stock, of a reinforced end plate, a non-rotary end bearing supported by said end plate, an end piece car ried by the journal and constructed With a beveled circumferential ange, and a revolving oil-elevator embracing said end piece bet-Ween said flange and the end o f the journal, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
The combination, in a self-oiling journal-box for railway rolling-stock, of a journal having a central longitudinal end recess, an end piece having a stem keyed fast Within said end recess, a revolving oil-elevator carried by said end piece, an end bearing coacting With said end piece, and an end plate supporting said end bearing, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
4. The combination, in a self-oiling journal-box for railway rolling-stock, of a reinforced end plate 'provided internally With a central square socket and having a central bolt-hole, a non-rotary end bearing having a boss fitted to said socket and provided With a central recess and bolt-hole, and an axial bolt having its head seated in the recess last named, substantially as hereinbefore speci- CHARLES A.
