SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,412, dated December 28, 1897:

Be it known that I, J AMES MAHEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at, Kellerton, in the county of Ringgold and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of auxiliary heaters for stoves for which Letters Patent were granted to me on the 10th day of November, 1896; and the object is to improve the construction and in-,.
crease the efficiency of the same.
To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved auxiliary heater. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly in section, of the damper and operating mechanism.
1 represents a verticalcylindrical drum provided with a communicating sleeve 2, which receives the pipe from thestove. 3 represents an inner cylindrical shell arranged concentrically with said cylinder and suspended therein from the shoulder 4, secured to the upper end of the cylinder. The lower end of the shell terminates within a short distance of the bottom 5 of the cylinder, so that there is formed an annularchamber 6 and an internal cylindrical chamber 7. The heated air or products of combustion from the stove passes downwardly around the annular chamber in the direction of the arrows and upwardly through the center chamber, whence it escapes into the chimney through a suitable communicating pipe 8.

and 10 represents a damper-slide adapted to close said orifice or open it at will by means of a depending rod 11, extending downwardly through the annular chamber and having its lower end 12 turned outwardly to extend through a vertical slot 13 in the cylinder 1 and form a handle for conveniently operating the damper above mentioned.
14 represents a slide-plate fixed to the handle 12 and arranged to close the slot 13 when the damper has closed the orifice 9. It will thus be seen that when the orifice 9 is closed the slot 13 is also closed, and the hot air from the stove passes downwardly around the inside of the heater for its entire length. If, however, the handle 12 be manipulated to open the damper 10, at the same time the slot 13 is also opened. Thus the heated air from the stove passes directly across the annular chamber and into the flue, while at the same time cold air is drawn in through the slot 13in the cylinder, which serves to cool the heater and ventilate the apartment at the same time. The arrangement of this damper and the slide is such that when the slide has entirely covered the slot the damper is also entirely closed; but the slide may be drawn down to partially open the slide in the cylinder to admit air for ventilating purposes Without having opened the damper in the shell.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
A heater of the class described comprising the drum 1 formed with the vertical slot 13 and the sleeve 2, the shell 3 open at the top and bottom and fixed Within said drum 1, and formed with a draft-orifice 9 alined with the sleeve 2 in combination with the damper 10, adapted to control said draft-orifice 9, the
slide-plate 14 arranged to close the slot 13 and the rod 11 connecting said damper 10 and plate 14 and having its lower end turned horizontally outward so as to extend through said slot 13 and terminating in a projecting handle 12, substantially as shown and described. i
