AMOS BARNES, OF DETROIT, MIO HIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES GAMBLE AND JOHN M. BREWER, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,316, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed March 6, 1897. Serial N0. 626,135. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the =accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to match-safes; and it consists in improved means for delivering a single match at each operation of the delivering mechanism of the safe.
'My invent-ion is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a view showing the form of the roll for delivering the match.
In the drawings, A is the base, having a concave portion a, on which the match drops when delivered.
0 is a roll mounted in the sides of the frame. This roll is provided with a longitudinal groove 0, and is substantially like the roll shown in my prior applications, Serial Nos. 604,398 and 585,867, except that the rear wall of the groove 0 is at its maximum height at the center and recedes toward each end until it reaches the level of the bottom of the groove This construction is to overcome a difficulty experienced with the former constructions, in which one end of a match would catch in a groove at the end when the roll would draw the match around at an angle across the roll. The construction shown herein obviates that difficulty. The roll is also provided forward of the groove with a series of annular ribs 0 0 which have their greatest depth immediately above the groove and recede to the body of the roll, as shown in the drawings.
D is the front of the match-safe, and is pivoted in the frame at d and allowed a slight swinging movement. It is provided at the lower edge with teeth or fingers, which enter between the annular ribs 0 c on the roll 0 last-named portion comes directly over the 1 roll. This portion 6 forms a narrow ledge that will pass under a match as the roll comes back, and in conjunction with the portion 6 will straighten it and leave it parallel with the roll. The portion 6 forms a wall back of the matches that have dropped onto the roll, and this present device differs in that respect from my prior applications. In the former applications this wall was absent, and the matches were forced back into the body of the safe into and against the mass of matches resting therein. The construction of this device .is such that the space between the drag front D and the wall 6 is an additional chamber or cavity, in which the matches are straightened out and forced into a position parallel to one another. When the roll is in its normal position and the safe filled with matches, a few of the matches drop down over the end of the inclined portion of the bottom between the wall e and the drag front, the matches being approximately parallel. When the roll is operated, one of the matches drops into the longitudinal groove and is carried forward and delivered from the safe, while the remaining matches in the space over the rollride over the roll and are carried back by the ribs 0 c and the lower one drops or rolls into the groove, the operation being practically the same as in former devices.
What I claim is- 1. In a match -safe, a delivery-roll provided with a longitudinal groove, the rear wall of which is of the maximum height at the center and receding toward the ends, substantially as described.
2. In a match-safe, the combination of the frame, a roll mounted in the frame provided with a longitudinal groove, an inclined botbottom and depending wall at the end of the bottom over the roll provided with the rightangled edge a, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
ADIOS BARNES.
