FRANK SILVER KAUFFMAN, OF DEPE'WQNEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO GEORGE L ESHER, OF'ALBION, NEW YORK.
NECKTIE-RETAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,069, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed March 15, 1897.
To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SILVER KAUFF: MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Depew, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Retainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
A great deal of difficulty has been met with in the use of string-neckties upon standing collars by reason of the fact that they rise up above the collar and come in contact with the neck. My invention is designed to overcome this difficulty; and it consists of a metallic clip adapted to be attached to the rear collarbutton of a shirt through which the necktie or the neckband of a scarf may be passed, the same being held in place by means of the collar-button projecting through openings in said clip and engaging the inner surface of said necktie.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved retaining-clip. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same applied to the back of the shirt. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same showing the material of the necktie forced through the opening in said clip.
Like numerals of reference indicate like My improved retainer consists of a clip 1, preferably constructed of aluminium, silver, or other sheet metal, bent so as to form two side pieces 2 and 3, respectively, separated slightly one from the other and having registering openings 4 5 therein. The lower end Serial No. 627,491. (No model.)
of the inner side piece 2 is formed with an 5 upwardly-extending flange 6, and the outer side piece 3 is adapted to be bent outwardly for the purpose of permitting the insertion of the necktie thereinto.
In applying the device the opening 4 in the side piece 2 is placed around the collar-button 7 and the outer side piece 3 is bent outwardly, permitting the insertion of the necktie 8. When thus applied, the necktie may be adjusted back and forth, and upward movement thereof will be prevented by the engagement of the upper edge of said tie with the bent portion of the upper end of the clip. When it is desired to fasten the device, the outer side piece 3 is bent inwardly and the collar-button 7 is forced out through the outer opening 5, crimping the material of the necktie and preventing slipping of the same in any direction.
The device is extremely simple in construction, can be cheaply made, and will be found very effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A necktie-retainer consisting of a clip constructed of sheet metal bent so as to form parallel side plates slightly separated one from the other, and provided with registering openings, the inner of said side plates having an upwardly-extending flange at its lower end, and the outer of said side plates adapted to be opened and closed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK SILVER KAUFFMAN.
