A. ADAMS. HOLDER FOR DOORS.
Patented Deo. 14, 1897.
, vUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUSTIN ADAMS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER FOR DOORS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent NO. 595,428, dated December 14, 1897.
Appnanon ned .Tammy 14,1895.- serial No. 534,934. or@ model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN ADAMS, a citizen 'of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a Latch or Door-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to appliances designed for the purpose of holding or temporarily fastening in one position movable structures-as, for example, securing of doors, &c., in an open relation; and it has for its object the provision of a device simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and ecient in practical use.
To attain the desired end my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts first fully set forth, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which form a part of this specication, Figures l and 2 represent perspective Views of my vholding device respectively held in an open and closed relation. Fig. 3 -is a plan view, and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a side'elevation and a perspective view of my keeper.
Referring again to the drawings, Adenotes one member of my door-holder, consisting of a pivoted or swinging latch, as an arm provided with a collar A,movably secured thereto, and constructed and arranged to be normally held in a certain position, as by means of a weight, as the ball A3, located at the eX- tremity of the swinging latch A2.
of the arln'A therein, the said orifice being eccentric as regards the longitudinal axis of my tubular keeper B and communicating with the spirally-formedgroove heretofore described, which groove terminates in a locking recess or cavity B3. This recess is preferably located in line with the inclined edge The other member of my appliance consists of a keeper B in front of the same, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. v l
It will thus be seen that my invention consists in two relatively movable members of the combination, with one member provided with a pivoted or swinging latch and another member comprising a hollow tubular keeper provided with an` upwardly and rearwardly inclined spiral edge terminating in a downwardly and forwardly inclined slot or way,
whereby the movable members may become locked by a forward movement of the same and unlocked by a slight forward-and-backward movement of the said member.
In operation the arm A is entered into the orifice of the keeper, and on account of the eccentric location of the same the latch is caused to ride von the inclined edge on short leverage until at rest in the forwardly and downwardly inclined slot, and the door, &c., is thereupon held in an open relation by means of the said engagement of the two members of my appliance. p When it is desired to disen gage the said members,as to pull the door shut, a motion toward the back of the door forces the swinging latch to the end of the depression or recess adjacent to the extremity of the inclined curvenamely, at the point band by a quick pull the latch is thrown to the inclined way B', whereupon the latch rides upon and off the said edge on a long leverage, an easy action in releasing the two members of my appliance from engagement and the door from the keeper being thereby secured.
As it is evidentv that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reserve the right'to make such changes, and that@ What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a fastening device, the combination with one member, provided with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined spiral edge or way, terminating in a downwardly and forwardly inclined edge or way, of another relatively IOO movable member, and means for retaining said movable member in engagement with said latter edge or way whereby the members may be engaged by a forward movement of the object to be fastened, and unlocked bya slight forward-and-backward movement of the said object.
2. In a fastening device consisting of two relatively movable members, the combination with one member provided with a pivoted or swinging latch of another member comprising a hollow tubular keeper provided with an upwardly and rearwardlyinclined spiral edge terminating in a downwardly and forwardly inclined slot or way whereby the movable member may become locked by a forward movement of the same and unlocked by a slight forward-and-backward movement of the said member.
